Frances McDormand-Marge Gunderson
William H. Macy-Jerry Lundergard
Steve Buscemi-Carl Showalter
Peter Stormare-Caear Grimsrud
The Coen Brother's film, "Fargo" makes fun of everything I hate, with one hell of a dark edge. I just hat those eternally-perky Minnesotians (note: Minnesotians Is probaly not a real word, but I shall include it anyway)
Who talk like idiots and refuse to do anything exciting.
This has the town of Fargo, Minnestoa as the setting for a hostage scam headed
By the pathetic loser, Jerry (William H. Macy). He hires two thugs to go
Kidnap his wife and hold her for ransom. After her father pays the ransom
Money, Jerry and the thugs will split the money. But they have a problem in the
Form of the very cheerful, very pregnant Marge Gunderson (Frances McDormand
Who won an Oscar for her performance). She is a small town cop hot on their
Trail.
While I know that that description makes it sound like an action film it's
Really not. I just can't write a synopsis of a film well. That's my biggest
Problem, aside from my lack of talent. The movie actually hovers somewhere between thriller, mystery, and Coen brothers odd.
The acting in this film is top-notch. It had one of my favorite actors ever
Steve Buscemi is in this film. He is just cool
in whatever he does. Peter Stromare plays Buscemi's partner. Since he dosen't
have much dialouge so he doesn't come off as a great a character as anyone else
but he does a good job at brooding and looking mean. McDormand is good as well.
She is just a Minnesotian so she has no emotion other than impossibly happy(boy
Did I probaly piss some people off with that one)but she is able to turn her emotionless into a multi-faceted woman who seems to feel a range of feelings while only smiling. But the best performance was given by William H. Macy. As the loser Jerry Ludergard he got to be sniveling and weasly, which is every actor's dream.
And a word has to be said about the script. As Directors the Coen brothers are okay. As producers they are pretty good. But as writers they suceed in a grand fashion, to become some of the best writers of their time. It's great the way they take a genre and just blow the hell out of it. Raising Arizona was not really a comedy, Miller's Crossing was not really a mob film, and Barton Fink was not really a Drama. They were all these things and more. And fargo takes ideas from all of these films and blends them together to create a smart, hip and overall entertaining movie.
