PI isn't really the name of the film I am now reviewing. The actual name is the mathmatic symbol for the math figure "pi" which is actually 3.1415926554... If you paid any attention in math class, you will know that pi goes on forever and ever and has no end.
You're probaly expecting some sort of quip about how pi the movie and pi the number are similar becuase they both go on forever and ever. I'm afarid I can't truthfully make that stament though. pi the movie moves along at a brisk pace. Put it is not the usual light entertainment that comes along with the phrase "brisk pace".
pi> is the scariest movie I've seen all year. The dark atmosphere and the EXTREMELY heavy handed metaphors make a great film, albeit a difficult film to actually sit through. In fact this film is so difficult to sit through, I can't even reccomend for anyone to see it. But those who believ that they are up to the task will have quite a treat. Darren Aronofsky's dark film is a brilliantly twisted and original narrative about how obession eats away at us. It is inventive and original. I believe that all film classes ahould be shown this film to prove that you can make a great film with a close to nothing budget. All a film really needs to be great is a good idea behind it. Of course great special effects can help (see Titanic. Who the hell am I kidding? You probaly already have), as long as the effects don't take the place of the story (see Lost In Space. Then again, don't).
This film tells the story of a young math genius named Mxamillian . He is obsses with finding the secrets of life through the use of numbers. He builds a big, incrediable supercomputer at his home and he works on it day and night. You see, he has devised a 216 number formula that he believes explains the meaing of exestince. He believes that if he works all numbers with the formula he can predict chaos.
This mental fascination leads him into a derived seclusion, bothe mentally and physically, from the outside world. He has all of his food delivered to his door by a neighbor that he barely even talks to. He has constans nosebleeds and headaches. His life is a simple forumla. He works all of the time, and he trusts nonone but his old teacher, who believes that he's going insane. Eventually Maximillan finds out that many religious leaders believ that the name of god has 216 letters. Max begins to believe that he has discovered the name of god. Thisleads to even more seclusion.
Two groups of people recognixe Max's genius and trie to get him to use his brilliance to their own gain. One group is represented by a member of a high powered Wall Street firm. Her firm discovers that Maxmillian has gotten an unnatural number of stock risks correct. When she finds out about his formula to uncode chaos she figures that her company can become rich by being able to predict everything that's going to happen.
The other group is a Hasidic cult that believs Max can finally unravel the mysteries of their religion. They are exspecially excited to learn that he might have just stumbled upon the true name of god
This movie provides some of the most interesting ideas of any movie that I have ever seen. It will defenitely have you disscussing about it afterwards. Perhaps it dwells on the exact same concept that makes math as a subject so interesting. It has an infinite number of complex concepts behind it. In math you can always discover different things out. There will never be a shortage of ideas and concepts. And the way this films merges religion and mathmatics is pure genius. This movie defenietly has one of the most interesting ideas behind it that I've ever seen.
But I will warn you once again, this is not an easy film to watch. But if you really want to see one of the year's best films don't be afarid to attend a midnight screening at your local theater.
