The word "Ronin" is a Japanese word that means, literally,
"masterless samurai". It refers to a samurai who has disgraced his
homeland by failing to protect his master. This samurai must now wander
about, selling his services to bandits and thieves. In this film
"Ronin" stands for a group of old spys who have long since been forced
out of their jobs, and they now have to sell out their services to
terrorists and other assorted scourges of the world. A couple of them
are hired by an Irish woman. Their job is perform an ambush upon a
group of people who have control of a mysterious case, who's contents
are never fully resolved. Of course, no job in these films are that
easy and their are double crosses and triple crosses and quite a few
explosions thrown in to keep these people busy.
Director Jonathon Frankenheimer (The Mauncharian Canidate) has
crafted on of the best action film since Face/Off . And just like
Face/Off there's a lot more to this film than just gunfire and
explosions (although the gunfire and explosions ar done well). This is
truly a thinking man's action film. It has engaging characters and a
eternally interesting plot that will keep you guessing to the end. Plus
it has Jean Reno, the wonderful French actor. He was in La Femme
Nikita, The Professional (a personal favorite), The Visitors, For
Rosanna, and (unfourtantly) Godzilla. He is currently the master of the
cold stare and the deadly look, and his role here is absouletly perfect
for him.
This film is a non-stop roller coaster ride of a film that you
can't miss. It is beyond a doubt the best action film of the year.
