Jackie Chan-Detecitve Lee
Chris Tucker-Detective James Carter
Elizabeth Pena-Tania Johnson
Tzi Ma-Consul Han
Julia Hsu-Soo Yung
A little chinese girl in Los Angeles is kidnapped. Her father, a
very powerful chinese consulate, gets a police man from Hong Kong to
rescue her. The LAPD decides that the chinese policeman is a threat, so
they send a cocky young black officer to babysit him. Jackie Chan beats
quite a few people, some shit blows up, and Chris Tucker talks real
fast.
That pretty much sums it up for the new film "Rush Hour". I still
have no idea why they call it that, and if any my readers could inform
of this they will get an honorable mention on my site (do you ever get
the feeling that I think I'm a lot more popular than I actually am?).
The movie really isn't about any plot or anything like that,
although the plot is better than that of most recent action films. No,
this movie's real pleasure comes in the form of the two leads's
chemistry together. Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker aren't quite as good
as Mel Gibson And Danny Glover in Lethal Weapon, but they are very
effective as a duo. Jackie especially. He is one of the great "fun"
entertainers, and he does everything in his power to make sure the
audience has fun. Chris Tucker is just like a young Eddie Murphy, and
he has a great "Beverly Hills Cop" attitude about him. The two playy
off each other's personality great.
The comedy scenes are pretty lackluster, but the action scenes are
pretty good. I'm not quite sure if Jackie Chan did his own stunts in
this film (american producers a lot more cautious about injurys to their
stars) but they're still pretty impressive. The gunfire is pretty
prevalent, but it's not used nearly as much as, say, a good John Woo. I
think you'll like this film if you like what Jackie Chan and Chris
Tucker have done previously.
Also some trivia: This is Jackie Chan's first starring role in an
American film.
