Popular comedian Jim Carrey, whose acting
was snubbed last year at the Oscars, took home his second straight Golden
Globe award for best actor on Sunday, putting him in contention again for
an Oscar.
Carrey won the Golden Globe for best actor,
comedy, for his performance as the legendary off-the-wall comedian Andy
Kaufman in Man on the Moon.
Carrey won a Globe last year for best actor
in a drama for The Truman Show about a boy who grows up at the center
of a television show.
"Sure, I'll take this," said
the comedian, adding, "I am the Tom Hanks of the Golden Globes,"
referring to the three-time Oscar winner.
The Globes, handed out each year by the 84-member
Hollywood Foreign Press Association, often give an early indication of
how films, actors and actresses will fare at the Academy Awards, the industry's
top awards, presented in March by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and
Sciences.
But last year Carrey failed to garner even
a nomination for an Academy Award, leading many Hollywood insiders to cry
foul. This year's Golden Globe may just be the accolade that is needed
to gain him a nomination this year.
Backstage, Carrey was asked about his chances
for an Oscar and said he had "high hopes" of winning one
someday. Then he sang, "Anyone knows an ant can't move a rubber tree
plant," from the song "High Hopes."
