Jim Carrey seems to be trapped in his new role as a state trooper with a split personality. The superstar was nice enough when he started filming "Me, Myself and Irene." Shooting in Jamestown, R.I., he delighted local kids with the gross-out question: "Who wants eye boogers?" But now that filming has moved to Richmond, Vt, townsfolk there are finding the goofball aloof. "Families came from 50 miles away just to get a glimpse of him," says Betsy Bott, who was not allowed in her Daily Bread restaurant when Carrey was shooting there. "The Star," as she calls Carrey, "wouldn't even wave to the kids." Carrey's co-star, Renee Zellweger, talked with locals "like a normal person," says Bott. Carrey? "He would walk out, get into his Cadillac sports-utility vehicle with black-tinted windows, and they would drive him to his trailer." Carrey's rep insists, "Jim has always been good about signing autographs and taking pictures with kids." While some in Richmond were thrilled to have Tinseltown's business, why did Carrey and his movie need such heavy security? One eyewitness says he saw a movie staffer threaten an old lady who snapped pictures of the cast: "He said, 'If you take another picture, I'm going to have to take your camera.'" Our observer then saw security people tell a 12-year-old girl to get off her own porch, even though she was a block from the cameras. When the girl refused, says the source, the guards asked two Vermont state troopers to act like Carrey's character and force her to move. A source says that a woman with a baby was barred from crossing the street to get to her own house, even though she pleaded, "But it's nap time! I've got to get her home!" Local shopkeepers also have had second thoughts about renting their main street to Hollywood. Asked about his unpleasant dealings with the movie production staff after his customers were blocked for a day, hardware-store owner Dan Noyes would say only, "I want to let it drop. It's time for me to back out." A spokeswoman for the movie — made by "There's Something About Mary" film makers Bobby and Peter Farrelly — said she was "not aware of the problem."

Rob Moran and Zen Gesner will reteam with the Farrelly brothers on their upcoming comedy, "Me, Myself and Irene" opposite Jim Carrey and Renee Zellweger. Both Moran and Genser have appeared in previous Farrelly pictures "Dumb and Dumber," "Kingpin" and "There's Something About Mary." Shooting is already underway in Vermont.

National Enquirer, June 1999
"But I am Jim Carrey!!!", the comic carped to a security guard who barred him from entering his own trailer on the set of his flick "Me, Myself And Irene." The guard didn't recognize Jim Carrey, who was in elaborate makeup, and told him"Only Jim Carrey!" was allowed inside. The security chief straightened things out and offered to can the guard, but Jim said: "No way! I'm glad the makeup job worked so well!"

Addison County Independent, May 27, 1999
Addison - Only a month ago, Addison resident David Young was one face among thousands competing for a fleeting appearance in the Jim Carrey movie, "Me, Myself and Irene." Tuesday saw Young covered with goosebumps - not only because he was one of 650 souls chosen as an extra for the movie, but because he was shivering on a raw morning at the Addison 4 Corners Store, anticipating a big screen moment in his own hometown. "I thought I would be going to Essex or somewhere else," said an ebullient Young, who was accompanied by his wife Kelli to the 4 Corners Store, which had been pre-selected by 20th Century Fox for a scene in the comedy. "We had just been joking that nothing ever happens around here," Kelli Young said while film crews arranged lights, directed traffic and prepared actors for the scene. "Then we found out there was a movie happening four houses down from where we live." The Youngs realized that their brush with Hollywood could range anywhere from nothing to a nanosecond. Not only were the odds slim for a shot, but David Young had been told the previous evening to be available on site, dressed "casual." That meant getting excused from work and showing up in a sweater and shorts on a frigid, rainy morning with the only guaranteed payoff being $45 for an eight-hour day of waiting. Still, just being there was enough of a reward for Young. "Not only is it just fun to be part of a movie, Jim Carrey is one of my favorites," Young said. "It's just the chance to be on camera, to be a face in the crowd." There were about 25 faces in the crowd of movie onlookers - "gawkers," in Hollywood parlance - at Addison four corners on Tuesday. Some were on standby with Vergennes Area Rescue Squad, some worked at nearby businesses, and others just wanted to see if they could get a glimpse of Carrey and/or co-star Renee Zellweger. The movie crew served notice that they were not only directing the motion picture. With the aid of paid security and Vermont State Police, the small crowd was sequestered behind a "no parking" sign across from the store on Route 22A. People standing on nearby public property were warned that their cameras should remain unused. This reporter and an accompanying photographer - stationed in an across-the-street building with the permission of the owners - were chastised by a large security guard for not observing their suggested blackout. Still, being within a few dozen yards of a big studio production was exciting to many of those assembled. "I'm flabbergasted," said Vergennes resident Dee Whittemore, who paused to take in the scene prior to the start of her workday at 11 a.m. "I've never witnessed a movie going on before." Whittemore was fascinated by the transformation of the outside of the store. Gone was the regular "Addison 4 Corners Store" sign. In its place were two different signs, one reading "Four Corners One Stop Shop," the other reading "We Have Everything." The store porch was adorned with various knick-knacks, including bicycles, shirts and fluorescent wind socks. Action on the set was sporadic. In between takes, crew members milled around, some talking, others biding their time with a game of penny toss. A brief downpour interrupted activity for about 20 minutes. Route 22A traffic at the four corners was rendered even more challenging, as motorists - mostly tractor trailer truck drivers - coasted by the set, craning their necks to get a better glimpse of the production. At roughly 11:30 a.m., things got rolling. Carrey, dressed casually and sporting a crewcut, emerged from the store carrying a bag of groceries. He put them into a car parked outside, in which Zellweger was seated in the passenger seat. After a brief conversation with her, he turned his attention to a group of four beer-drinking, cigarette-smoking baseball players standing near a pickup truck also parked outside the store. A skirmish was imminent. "It's amazing what they do for just one scene," said Ferrisburgh resident Shirley Moulton, another observer. "It will be interesting to see what this scene looks like in the movie, after being out here." Moulton pronounced herself a fan of Carrey, saying he reminded her of Jerry Lewis. "I just hope the clouds disappear, so we aren't known for the clouds," Moulton added, glancing skyward. Bob Marsette, a worker at the nearby United Agro Products Northeast, took all the hoopla in stride. "I'm not a big movie fan, but this is good for the local economy," said Marsette, a Brandon resident. "I'm glad to see it's being done here, instead of somewhere else." Marsette was incredulous at the time and expense the production spent on the small scene. Trucks, trailers for the stars and other vehicles for crew and equipment were parked behind the goings on, but numerous. "I can see why a ticket to the movies costs so much," he said. The scene had some special significance for Tina LaFleche. A resident of Panton, she is the daughter of Louie and Diane Rivers, owners of the store. While her parents would not be in the movie, she noted that the family dog had been tabbed for the scene. Zak, a 10-year-old German shepherd, was slated to participate in the skirmish involving Carrey and the ballplayers, according to LaFleche. While they won't be on film, the Riverses were set to have a private meeting with Carrey, LaFleche said. It's a day that the family will remember - and undoubtedly play over and over again on film - for years to come. "They are pretty excited," LaFleche said. "You wouldn't expect something like this here in Addison."

Hollywood has officially arrived in Vermont -and it comes in the form of Jim Carrey and Renee Zellweger - the two A-list actors who are in Vermont filming the new 20th Century Fox movie, "Me, Myself and Irene." Traffic was at a standstill at times this morning while the crew filmed a scene at the Go-Go Gas station on Susie Wilson Road in Essex. The production drew a crowd of on-lookers and fans who were thrilled to get a glance of the silver screen's wild leading man. The film is being directed by Bobby and Peter Farrelly, the brothers responsible for "Dumb and Dumber" and last summer's mega smash "There's Something About Mary." In "Me, Myself and Irene," Carrey plays a Rhode Island State Trooper with a split personality who falls for Irene, played by Zellweger. Fans say it's Jim Carrey's unforgettable screen characters that keeps them coming back time and time again. Although the movie is being filmed primarily in Vermont, the story does not take place in the Green Mountain State. Vermont is merely doubling for Upstate New York. Production is slated at locations throughout Vermont for the next two months and is expected to pump millions of dollars into the economy. Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer are also scheduled to film a movie in Addison County starting in August. So, for movie fans big and small, this is the summer to bask in the glow of the Hollywood lights.

The Narragansett Times, May 21, 1999
Filming of "Me, Myself and Irene" moved last Monday, 17th, to Great Island (Narragansett), a small beach community near Galilee. A summer cottage on Mollusk Drive, a dead-end street, was used as Charlie Baileygates' (Jim Carrey) house. In one of the scenes filmed on location during the week, Charlie hosts a barbecue at his home for his colleagues. To avoid a reprise of the Jamestown chaos, the Narragansett police and a private security firm guarded the set, while a police boat was also said to keep the coast clear of boats coming too near. Besides Narragansett, other scenes were also shot in Newport this week by a helicopter flying over the Pell Bridge. According to the movie's publicist, stand-ins replaced the principal actors. Last Friday, and still in Newport, the filmmakers closed down all of Brenton Point and a large part of Ocean Drive, due to a sudden decision to make use of King's Beach for a newly added picnic scene.

The Providence Journal, May 16, 1999
"Me, Myself and Irene" continued filming in Newport last Friday at and around Brenton State Park. Several "driving scenes" were shot including one where Jim Carrey's character is assigned to take Irene back to New York on his police motorcycle. The park was closed due to the shoot and re-opened to the public on Saturday. Other scenes filmed on Friday show Charlie (Jim Carrey) and his first wife (Traylor Howard) falling in love and sitting by the ocean. Production stopped for the weekend and will re-start Monday, 17 on an island.

The crew moved to Newport on Thursday afternoon for a wedding scene which took place at St. John's Episcopal Church, in the Point section of Newport.

Jim Carrey looks so sharp in a Rhode Island state police uniform that the force is tempted to offer him a job. Carrey is in Rhode Island filming a new comedy, "Me, Myself and Irene." He plays a state trooper with two personalities, both in love with the same woman. The film is by Bobby and Peter Farrelly, the Rhode Island brothers who made "There's Something About Mary" and "Dumb and Dumber." The Farrelly brothers consulted with the state police to make sure Carrey looked authentic. "They did a good job, said Maj. Harold Watson, the No. 2 person on the force. "Their main concern was getting the uniform right," he said. With his buzz cut, aviator sunglasses and gray uniform, Carrey might get away with asking for your driver's license. "The haircut is regulation. The glasses look regulation. If he decides to dump his movie career, we'll sign him up," Watson said.

The Boston Globe OnLine, May 14, 1999
Jim Carrey, dressed as a police officer, stopped traffic in Jamestown, R.I., yesterday while filming a scene for his new movie. Carrey has been in this bayside town (next door to Newport), shooting scenes for local filmmakers Peter and Bobby Farrelly 's "Me, Myself and Irene" - which also stars Renee Zellweger. In the film, Carrey plays a Rhode Island state trooper with a split personality, both sides in love with the same woman. Yesterday life imitated art as real crowds watched real police shut down Narragansett Avenue as fake cop Carrey was filmed stepping out of a barber shop to control fake gawkers at the scene of a fake accident. Just before, Carrey (actually his stunt double) drove a yellow Crown Victoria into a barbershop window in an apparent fit of anger.

... and puts the 'eye' in Rhode Island
The cast and crew of "Me, Myself and Irene" are getting a tour of New England. They've been camped out in Jamestown since Tuesday, but yesterday afternoon traveled to Newport for a wedding scene. Soon, the entire production moves to Burlington, Vt., for several weeks of shooting. Although he greeted crew members after the shooting yesterday, Carrey has been avoiding autograph sessions, fans say. On his first day in town, though, he proved himself worthy of a Farrelly brothers film by offering a group of children a surprise - some "eye boogers." No, we don't know what they are, and we're really afraid to ask.

Jamestown, Rhode Island - Officer Jim Carrey?
Probably not. But, maybe. Apparently, "The Truman Show" star, currently shooting the comedy "Me, Myself and Irene," looked so authentic in his Rhode Island state police uniform that the state's law enforcement was tempted to offer him a job. In the movie, directed by "Dumb and Dumber" and "There's Something About Mary" helmsmen Bobby and Peter Farrelly, Carrey plays a state trooper with two personalities, both in love with the same woman. So the brothers consulted with the state police to make sure Carrey - who sports a buzz cut, aviator sunglasses and gray uniform -- looked like the real deal. "Their main concern was getting the uniform right," Maj. Harold Watson said, adding that everything about Carrey's costume "looks regulation." "If he decides to dump his movie career, we'll sign him up."

Robert Forster, Oscar nominated for "Jackie Brown," continues his resurgence with a plum role in the Peter and Bobby Farrelly-directed "Me, Myself and Irene." Forster plays the police captain boss of the split personality cop played by Jim Carrey.

Rhode Island, May 11, 1999
Jim Carrey started filming his next film, "Me, Myself and Irene" today in Jamestown, Rhode Island. The film, directed by the Farrelly Brothers ("Dumb & Dumber," "There's Something About Mary") is about a Rhode Island State Trooper who suffers from a split personality. Things go awry when both personalities become interested in the same woman - Irene (Renee Zellweger). The movie is said to shoot for approximately two weeks in Rhode Island and then move to Vermont for about 10 weeks. The Rhode Island locations being mentioned are Newport (May 13 and 14), two or three days in Jamestown and at least four in Narragansett. "Me, Myself and Irene" has a release date set for December of this year.
