THE MTV MOVIE AWARDS

"After this year's so-called Oscar race, I decided that no matter what they tried to take away from me, I was going to be, who I am."

Jim Carrey, nominated for zip at the Oscars, nabbed the coveted popcorn box trophy for best male actor at MTV Movie Awards, handed on June 5th at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California. The elastic-limbed actor dressed as a long-haired biker, in a shoulder-length wig and fake beard for his speech, a personality he claimed was inspired by being snubbed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Dressed in a shoulder-length wig and fake beard, the Truman Show star took the stage with cigarette in hand and vowed to continue the good fight: "After this year's so-called Oscar race, I decided that no matter what they tried to take away from me, I was going to be who am."
Carrey's acceptance speech may also be due for some creative editing. His name drew the least applause when the Best Male Performance nominees were announced, and the never-shy actor let the crowd know about it when he began his remarks. "I didn't hear much of a f---in' cheer when my name went up there," he said, and then launched into a lengthy, rambling speech liberally laced with profanities.
Jim was given a standing ovation when he left the podium.

No-No Yes-Yes On MTV
Ever outlandish Jim Carrey broke through a long-standing TV taboo last Thursday night on MTV, during its annual movie awards telecast. During his purposefully rambling acceptance speech for best actor (for "The Truman Show"), Carrey (dressed as and carrying on as a hippie) let loose with the derogatory term to women that TV generally allows only in a reference to cats. MTV, which had several days to edit the show before it aired — during which time it did delete a joking reference to the Colorado shooting tragedy — decided to let Carrey's comment into the program. "Jim's acceptance speech was so genius we wanted to leave it intact," a spokeswoman said Friday. "We aired a disclaimer before the show and his speech aired near the end of the show" (which began at 9 p.m.). MTV's spokeswoman said the word — which can be heard on the Howard Stern radio show and on "NYPD Blue," but only as a euphemism for a wimp, not as a crass description of a female — would be excised from reruns of the show because they air in a variety of time periods. "There has been no viewer response to this," she said. Meanwhile, the show generated its highest ratings ever, drawing in about 4.6 million households, a 64% increase over last year's turnout.

Jim Gets Carrey-ed Away
Actress Rose McGowan was startled by Jim Carrey's wild hippie-style getup at Saturday's taping of the upcoming MTV Movie Awards. After seeing the comedian in long, black beard and fright wig, she joked at the MTV party that she was "afraid he might take me into a camper and chop me up." And, mind you, McGowan's current boyfriend is shock-rocker Marilyn Manson!
Carrey went the whole nine yards at the event, looking like he'd just stepped out of the 1960s. At a private party afterwards at the Buffalo Club in Santa Monica, Carrey befriended a young woman in a strapless dress who was overheard telling her friends, "I can't believe I'm leaving with Jim Carrey."
