Many of my fellow Daria fans are also fans of the Kim Possible show, a contemporary Disney cartoon series. Both are set in high schools and center on a girl student, but in many other ways they are very different shows. Daria was aimed at teenagers and adults who watch MTV. Kim Possible is geared to an audience partly of pre-teens. Instead of being a brainy eccentric, Kim is a crime-fighting vigilante who's also a cheerleader and popular at her school. The humor in Daria is ironic and satirical. The humor in Kim Possible has these features, but in the main it is broader and more over-the-top. It works in the tradition of humorous spy shows, the long tradition of spoofs of the James Bond movies. Comparing the two shows is rather like comparing The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis to Get Smart. (I'm showing my age here.) However, since I enjoy both shows, I can't help but wonder how the Daria characters and the Kim Possible characters would react if they got together. Hence, the idea of a crossover fic.
The first problem I had to handle was whether to conceive the show as a Daria ep with Kim Possible characters, or the other way around. I chose the other way around. The crossover fic is written as a Kim Possible ep, featuring Daria characters. As a result, some of the fanciful nature of Kim Possible invades Lawndale High, with Ms. Barch making a breakthrough superconductor discovery which Dr. Drakken wants to steal. (I wouldn't have Ms. Barch as a great inventor in a straight-up Daria fanfic.)
Also, because of a decision that Daria, Jane, and all four Fashion Club girls make at the end of the fanfic, it's an Alternate Universe fic from the point of view of the Daria show. I like to think of it as taking branching off into another dimension during the Third Season of Daria, but before Tom Sloan shows up with the complications he brings. This fic has nothing to do with the Tiffany's World series.
As I've already mentioned, Dr. Drakken is the featured villian in this fic, and his not-quite loyal sidekick Shego is also prominent. The plot centers on mind control, which is a recurring motif on the Kim Possible show.
In writing this fanfic, I needed to think about Shego's green glow power. So far as I can tell from the "canon" (the actual Kim Possible shows as opposed to the fanfics) Shego's power stuns people. It doesn't kill them. So I show her stunning people with it. However, logically speaking Shego's green glow should also have enough energy to kill people, since she's used it to blast holes in solid objects. I have concluded that in the canon Shego can use her power to kill people but chooses not to, for unstated reasons that may vary from one show to the next. In this fanfic, it's because she hopes to put them in the mind-control device and make them fighters for Drakken.
However, I do also show her threatening to kill people with her powers. It seems in character for Shego to make such a threat. One thing I've noticed about the Kim Possible show is that, despite all the life-threatening situations, no one ever utters the word "kill," and no one ever dies. Obviously Disney considers any direct reference to killing unsuitable for children. So I guess you could say my Kim Possible characters aren't quite in kid-friendly "Disney mode," just as my Daria characters aren't quite in cynical "MTV mode."
Here's the obligatory legal disclaimer. I do not own the Daria characters, on which MTV holds the copyright. I also don't own the Kim Possible characters, which are copyrighted by Disney. The only legal defense I can make is that I'm not making any money off of this, so there's no point in either company suing me.
So, if you're interested, just click the big orange button and read the fic. Boo-yah!
