EVIL DEAD (Collectors Edition DVD)
PLOT-In a secluded cabin, five young people unwittingly awaken the spirits of ancient demons.
VIOLENCE-Oooh, baby. People get stabbed, hacked up with an ax, burned in a fire, turned into monsters, explode, and melt into oozing blobs. This movie is so gory, the blood literally runs down the screen.
SEX/NUDITY-Unless you count the part where the girl is raped by the tree, there is no sex. However, you do get a couple obligatory quick breast shots here and there.
WHY I LIKED IT-I don't think I really need to elaborate on this. Although I consider EVIL DEAD 2, its "sequel", to be the best film of all time, the original is a great film as well. It has a huge cult following, and is considered by many to be up there with NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, THE EXORCIST, and TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE as one of the scariest movies ever made. I'd have to agree, as many times as I've seen it, I don't think I'll be home alone in the dark watching it anytime soon. Director Sam Raimi's dazzling camera work is still effective today, and Tom Sullivan's makeups are still creepy as hell. And, as if I needed to say it, lead actor Bruce Campbell is the freakin' man. You'll appreciate the acting & production even more once you know what they went through to make this thing. It starts off slow, but once EVIL DEAD kicks in, it's relentless.
MEMORABLE SCENES-This has changed over the years, but I think now my favorite scene is when the kids are listening to the tape recording of the demon resurrection passages. It bugs me out every time I see it. Very effective.
DVD NOTES-I love this edition of EVIL DEAD. Not only does the movie look and sound great, but the extras are incredible. While not as extensive as the ones for EVIL DEAD 2, you still get a lot. There are 2 audio commentary tracks, one with Sam Raimi & Rob Tapert, and one with Bruce Campbell by himself (the best reason to buy this disc). Both tracks are cool but Bruce's is beyond words in terms of both entertainment and information. There's a bunch of outtakes and footage from the making of the film also, plus the original trailer.
