FAUST: LOVE OF THE DAMNED
PLOT-A man sells his soul to the devil for the power to avenge his girlfriend's death.
VIOLENCE-Lots and lots of blood, dead people, and severed body parts all over the place.
SEX/NUDITY-The two main actresses are both shown naked and also having sex a few times. There is a big orgy at the end of the film too, and bits of sex and naked people are shown.
WHY I LIKED IT-This is one of the best movies I have seen in a long time, which is truly saying a lot considering how much it had to live up to. "FAUST" was a comic book in the early 1990's published by Northstar, and it was probably the coolest item in my collection at that time. Not only did it have a great story (and incredible black & white art by Tim Vigil), but it was also filled to the brim with violence, gore, and sex. Thinking back on it, I have no idea why they sold this shit to a kid. But I got it and I loved it. With that in mind, let me say that the film version of Faust could not have been in better or more capable hands. First off, the screenplay was written by David Quinn, who wrote the original comic. Second, it was directed by Brian Yuzna, the producer of "Re-Animator". Third, it was made on a decently large budget for a non-studio horror film. And it even features Herbert West himself, Jeffrey Combs, in a major role as a police officer. All the acting is excellent, the special effects are outstanding, and the cinematography kicks some ass (the D.P. is Jacques Haitkin, who filmed the original NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET). An all-around well-made movie. And fans of the comic book should be aware that this movie doesn't skimp on the blood or the sex. It is simply one of the best movie translations from a comic ever done.
DOWNSIDE-The film is extremely good given the amount of money they probably had to make it, but there are some noticeable limitatations regarding the special effects. However, the filmmakers use clever ways to divert us from this, leaving just a few hokey things here and there that don't amount to all that much anyway. The very few "morphing" shots were cruddy and should have been done more traditionally or creatively.
MEMORABLE SCENES-Mephistopheles (played by Andrew "Wishmaster" Divoff) uses his powers to cause a woman's breasts and ass to grow so huge that she ends up literally being swallowed by her own body. Sound weird? You got to see it. The effect was reminiscent of an twisted 80's film called "Society" that some may remember.
NOTES-The R-rated video version runs 99 minutes, and is missing some of the more explicit sex and gore. The DVD is unrated, and runs about 2 minutes longer. You get some heads being chopped off, more dismemberment & gushing blood, and a really great shot of Jaspers "doing it snoop doggy dogg" with a lady in the shower.
