Chapter 26

"Qui est elle?" Cheyenne asked as Josiah approached her.

Josiah took in a heavy breath and blew it out before he looked at Cheyenne. A concerned expression masked his strong features. He rested his hands on the butt of his gun and the knife that hung on his other side.

"Molly Gallagher." He answered solemnly. "A young innocent soul in torment. Her father has asked me to counsel her. Seems the child lost her mother a while back and it's been weighing heavily on her. Now with the disappearance of Miss Callaghan her nerves have become even more frazzled."

"Elle a peur de vous," Cheyenne said matter of factly.

Josiah looked at her curiously. "Afraid of me?"

Cheyenne nodded. "I see it in her eyes."

Josiah gave her a half-amused grin mistaking her comment for a touch of jealously. She'd shown such behavior before whenever Mrs. Standish had come to visit. What exactly sparked these spirits Josiah was unsure of. He and Cheyenne had been together a long time and as far as he could figure it was only she was use to being Josiah's number one female concern. To be honest it amused him to see Cheyenne show any kind of emotion other than the constant hate and anger she was prone to.

"And just how is it you know this?" He asked her suppressing his amusement.

Cheyenne glared at him. "I know," she said bluntly.

Josiah's expression turned to one of concern and curiosity. Cheyenne's perception of others was usually cautious and hostile. He sensed something different now, something he was uncertain about. Letting the subject drop for the time being Josiah motioned with his head toward the door.

"C'mon, lets go over to the saloon and get some grub."

Cheyenne followed Josiah out of the church and over to the saloon. They took a table in the back corner and Cheyenne positioned herself in her usual spot against the wall so that she could survey what was going on around her. Josiah ordered food for both of them along with two beers. The beers arrived first and they sat in silence drinking the brew while they waited for their food.

Cheyenne caught movement out of the corner of her eye from the stairs. She turned to see a very beautiful woman making her way slowly down the steps. Her brown wavy hair neatly secured in a bun and two wispy ringlets framed her delicate features. She held her hand across her ribs as if trying to protect them as she walked. She limped slightly on her left foot as she finally managed to make her way down the last step.

To Cheyenne's surprise the woman looked toward them and began to slowly make her way over.

Josiah stood politely and tipped his hat when the woman approached.

"Miss Lilly, are you sure you should be up and around so soon?" He said as he pulled a chair out for her to sit.

The woman took the seat thankfully and smiled at Josiah. "I'll be fine cher." she glanced in Cheyenne's direction.

Cheyenne sat eyeing the woman cautiously.

"I don't believe we have met." The woman said friendly.

"Forgive me ma'am." Josiah apologized. "This is my partner Cheyenne Beaujuex. Ani this is Miss Lily Patterson."

Lily smiled and held out a friendly hand. "How do you do."

Cheyenne only gave the Lily a curt nod as she leaned back in her chair and took another drink from her beer. Her eyes still fixed on the woman.

Lily uncomfortably pulled back her offered hand. Then looked again to Josiah ignoring Cheyenne's unfriendliness.

"Has there been anymore news of Bryn?" She asked him.

"No," Josiah answered sadly. "I'm afraid not ma'am"

Lily sighed softly. "The poor thing. I pray she is alright."

"As do I Miss Lily, as do I."

Lily stood preparing to leave the table and check on things behind the bar. Josiah stood and helped her up. Lily looked back at Cheyenne. "It was nice to meet you," she said before she turned and started to walk away.

Josiah returned to his seat.

"Et qui est cet un?" Cheyenne asked nodding toward Lily.

Lily smiled to herself and turned as she overheard Cheyenne's question to Josiah. She turned and smiled.

"I'm the new owner of this establishment." She answered for him then turned and continued on her way with a satisfied grin on her face.

A look of shock crossed Cheyenne's face realizing the woman had understood her. She looked at Josiah. He held a smug smile on his lips, shrugged and took another drink from his mug.
