Field Day is an annual Amateur Radio event. It is sponsored by the American Radio Relay League. The idea behind Field Day is to test equipment under simulated emergency operating conditions. To this end, Amateur Radio clubs and non-club groups set up Amateur Radio stations in the field. They often use generators for power to simulate the loss of commercial power. Antennas are set up just for Field Day. The use of existing antennas is banned. The object of Field Day is to contact as many other stations as possible during the operating period. Field Day is held on the last full weekend of June.
Amateur Radio operators have a long history of public service.
This operation can be anywhere from handling communications for a local parade to an emergency weather net to
Ham networks, usually shortened to nets, are groups of hams gathered together on the air for a specific purpose. One of these purposes is 'traffic handling', or the sending of written formal third party messages. The ARRL coordinates traffic handling in the United States through the orginization known as the National Traffic System (NTS). This multi-layered orginization coordinates activities between nets on the state, interstate and regional level. Messages are passed between the different levels at scheduled times.
