I have been active in liberal/left politics for years now - starting with the McGovern for President campaign in 1972. I am a definite politics junkie, and my activism goes way beyond just the internet - although the web does help a lot. I moderate a couple of email lists as well....scroll down for how to join them. We supply plenty of ammunition in them to fight the Right.

BIG GOVERNMENT

I am not a fan of big government, but I do believe in activist government. We have gotten big government by default - state and local governments have neglected and sometimes actively opposed efforts to clean the environment, ensure civil rights and opportunity for all Americans, and ensure an education for all our kids. We don't need more government than we can handle - but we deserve all the government we need!

REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS

I am staunchly pro-choice, but not necessarily pro-abortion. I think there are sound alternatives to abortion such as adoption, contraception and education. However, in the final analysis, the decision to abort must be between a woman, her doctor, and her God. I also think a woman should have the right to decisions about her body - and those decisions should not be codified by the Far or Religious Right.

Everyone has the right to their opinions, but - if you don't like abortions, don't have one!

GUN CONTROL

I believe in strict national control of handguns - they are not tools, they are instruments of maiming and death.

State by state control (or lack of) has failed miserably - it's time to make the rules nationwide. Hunting rifles should be licensed, with requirements of safety courses such as the NRA offers. Opponents to gun control always refer to the Second Amendment - but just to the first part - not to the part about maintaining a well ordered militia. Our safety is at stake....and after Columbine and all the other shootings, haven't we had enough?

RACE RELATIONS/HUMAN RIGHTS

I believe discrimination based on race, sex, national origin or sexual preference is not only wrong, it is plain stupid. It is the province of little minds and even smaller egos who need to denigrate others to feel good about themselves. It is also a waste of national resources - we don't know, but the person who could cure cancer may be standing on a corner drinking from a bottle in a paper sack due to racism. As to discrimination on the others, especially sexual preference: You may not like them or who they choose for bed partners, but do not make it difficult for them to hold a job or a place to live - like those of us "straights", gays' sexuality is only one aspect of their lives. It's time to get on with being a UNITED States: we don't have the time or people to spare on prejudice and discrimination. Enough!
