The Saint

Played By Roger Moore (1962 - 1969)

Roger Moore's journey into the Bond world started in 1962 when he became Simon Templar, the illustrious Saint. Having a strong background in acting already, Roger took on this role with admireable confidence and enjoyment, giving the public a ticket into a new world of espionage and excitement.

Over his seven year span as The Saint, Roger Moore filmed 118 hours of episodes, some better than others, but all entertaining to the last second. In 1962 when Dr.No was in production, Ian Fleming wanted Roger to be the first James Bond. Unfortunately he couldn't as he was tied to The Saint. After Fleming got to know Sean Connery and saw him in action during the films' making, he decided that Connery's aggressiveness and attitude worked about as good on screen as Roger's charm and humor would, despite the fact that Moore met the "Fleming" criteria as depicted in his novels.

The T.V. Saint Theme

Like the James Bond series, as The Saint became more popular and the public began associating the adventures with the character and just as Sean Connery was set typed with the Astin Martin sports car, Roger Moore's trademark lay with the Volvo P1800. Seen cruising the streets of whatever exotic locale the adventure called for, the P1800 became the televison car of the early 60's, engrossing thousands of Saint fans with its speed, beauty and grace.

Although there have been recent attempts in the past to rekindle the buring fire surrounding the Saint, including a popular 90's film starring Val Kilmer and Elizabeth Shue, Simon Templar and his legacy will more than likely always be remembered by the British actor who touched everyone with his suave charismatic love of life and adventure, the man who invented the raised eye-brow, Roger Moore.
