Although it won only three Academy Awards and lost in the major categories, it has since been hailed as one of the greatest motion pictures of all time. In 1989, the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress selected Sunset Boulevard as one of twenty-five landmark films, leading examples of American cinematic art.

In 1998, in celebration of 100 years of movie-making, the American Film Institute selected the 100 Greatest American Movies of All Time. At the number 12 position: Sunset Boulevard.
