A few days later, while Norma tries to amuse a bored Joe, the phone rings. It's Paramount Pictures. Norma is aghast that Mr. DeMille did not call her himself, and she refuses to take the call.
Three days later, she asks Max to drive her and Joe to Paramount. They receive some resistance at the gate, but an old guard recognizes her and lets them in.
She goes off to the Samson and Delilah set to meet Mr. DeMille, who has no idea why she came. He has an assistant make a few phone calls. Although he finds out that someone else on the Paramount lot had called Norma to ask about borrowing her car for a new Hope-Crosby Road Picture, he is gentle with Norma, who has been placed in a very emotional state, having returned to her home studio for the first time in years. He tells her that he's busy with his current picture, but he'll get back to her.
While Norma is with Mr. DeMille, Joe sees Betty. She's insistent on rewriting one of Joe's scripts with him. He tries to brush her off, but her idea has really intrigued him. Before he can say anything, Max starts blowing the horn of their car, since he just found out the real reason that Paramount called them.
Although Max and Joe know the truth, they hide it from Norma. She
begins a vigorous beauty regime to get her ready for her big return, a
return that would never be.
