When Titanic was first announced for the 1997 season, there was something like gasps from the collected throats of Broadway pundits. A musical about the Titanic? In the words of Allan Corduner, who played Steward Henry Etches, "Tacky!"
Despite luke warm critical response, Titanic emerged as the hit of the 1997 season, winning five Tony awards including Best Set Design (Stewart Laing), Best Book (Peter Stone), and Best Musical (Maury Yeston, Peter Stone, and Dodgers Productions).
Why? To spout the party line here, it's the officers--and Harold Bride. I mean, really, are there any other interesting characters?
