PATCH ADAMS
8.5 Out Of 10 Stars
Whenever the name "Robin Williams" comes to mind, either you're gonna
laugh or cry. His roles lately have been everywhere from serious in "What Dreams
May Come" and a nutcase role in "Father's Day". His latest film "Patch Adams"
has him playing a somewhat funny role, but at times a dramatic role, which ends
with one of his best films to date. The story is about a man who wants to
become a doctor, but more importantly, wants to treat patients and not just
the disease. As he says in the film "You treat a patient, you win you lose, but
if you treat a person, I guarantee you win, no matter what the outcome." The film
has it's funny moments, as well as some tear jerkers. It was wonderfully cast, as
all the actors did a terrific job. Monica Porter, who plays Carin, does a
fantastic job as the woman trying to become a doctor. Bob Gunton, who plays
Dean Walcott, portrays the "mean dean" better than anyone could have done. But
probably the most memorable, yet short role, would be that of Peter Coyote
(E.T., Sphere) who plays a man suffering from colon cancer. Some people, however,
may get tired of Robin Williams and his comedy portrayed on the screen,
as he does it over and over in films throughout the years. I still love his talents,
but there are always people who don't care for it. Some parts in the film,
while acted well, were somewhat cardboard characters without depth. Bob Guntons
role would be an example of this, as he plays out a Dean against Patch Adams
and all he stands for. Robin Williams fan or not, this film is a must see for
everyone.
