THE PRINCE OF EGYPT

9 Out Of 10 Stars

This being the first feature length animated film from the new studio "Dreamworks SKG", I was a little skeptical at first. The previews looked excellent, but you have to see to believe this epic masterpiece. The film totally blew me away with its in depth story of the life of moses, the beautiful musical numbers, and the state of the art special effects. First, lets start with the story. It pretty much stays in line with the original story from "Exodus" within the Christian Bible. There are some flaws here and there, one being that Moses brother Aaron was the speaker and went with Moses everywhere. However, in the film, Moses wife was his "right hand person". Overall the story is intact, but is not without flaws. The voice acting by such great actors such as Val Kilmer, Danny Glover, Sandra Bullock, Martin Short, Steve Martin, Patrick Stewart, and a ton more, were excellent and well placed. The way in which they combined traditional animation with computer generated images was for the most part seamless and many people didn't know which was which at times. Key scenes, for example, the burning bush, the Angel of Death, the plagues, the parting of the Red Sea, were almost totally computer effects, and were absolutely breathtaking on the big screen. I've never seen so many wide-eyed people in a theater at once. This film makes disney animation look like a two year old drew the pictures. But, the upcoming Disney film "Tarzan" to be released in the Summer of 1999, combines many computer images with animation, so it looks as if Disney is striking back. The music in "The Prince of Egypt" was done very well, the only song that just didn't fit well in the story was "You're Playing with the Big Boys Now". It seemed to be geared toward a younger audience, which isn't bad, but for this type of film, the song should have been dropped all together. A truly groundbreaking movie that will no doubt make a big buck in the process. Go see this film, you won't be disapointed.
