Banshea’s eyes flickered open.
"Jalapeña, what a headache!" she mumbled. She looked around. Ghy had been watching her, and smiled.
"She’s all right now," Ghy smiled as she said this to the others who were gathered.
"Who are you?" Banshea asked. She tried to get up, but Ghy put a hand on her shoulder.
"Don’t. You’re not strong enough yet. You need your rest. After a day or so of sleep, you’ll be fine, but don’t over exert yourself right now." Banshea nodded, but didn’t quite understand.
"What happened? Did I get struck by lightning during the storm?" she asked.
"You mean, you don’t remember?" Mikaia asked, "Any of it?"
"What?"
"Shh," Shaunsha hushed Mikaia as she started to speak. She whispered, "She doesn’t need to know."
"You were indeed struck by lightning," a weary voice said next to Banshea. Turning she saw who it was: Casha! She was lying on the make-shift bed next to Banshea’s. "But that was weeks ago. Much has happened since then, which you apparently don’t remember. Don’t worry yourself about it, it is in the past." Casha smiled at this. "Since you don’t remember, though, it would probably be a good idea for me to say that I’m glad to be reunited with you, my sister, even if I must now go back to my own place in time."
Banshea could hardly believe her ears. Of course the part about being from a different time didn’t surprise her, but Casha, her sister? Much had happened, indeed.
Lilah sadly walked over to Casha.
"Now, Mommy? Can’t I stay just a little while longer?" Banshea wasn’t nearly as surprised by this as she might have been. It made sense to her. She had discovered that the child was related to her in some way during a vision some time ago, but she hadn’t shared this knowledge.
"No, Honey. We should go." Banshea smiled.
"Perhaps you can come and visit another time," she said. Lilah grinned and threw her arms around Banshea’s neck. Then she stepped back. Casha wrapped an arm around Lilah’s waist, and Ghy took Lilah’s hand.
"Good bye," Ghy said. "We will meet again." And then they were gone, back to their own time.
Brooklyn came and sat by Banshea on the edge of the bed. Shaunsha nudged Mikaia and the two quietly slipped out of the room.
"Who was that Ghy person?"
"She was, is, er… will be," Banshea smiled, "a talented healer. We went through a lot, and you and Casha came out the worst for it. Lilah went to her own time to get Ghy to come and help the two of you out." Brooklyn looked wistfully out the window. Banshea pushed herself up so she was sitting rather than lying down. "Careful!" Brooklyn grabbed some pillows to prop her up. "You heard Ghy. You need to rest." Banshea smiled.
"We never did get to talk."
Brooklyn smiled at her. She must not remember anything, or the talk wouldn’t be necessary.
"I know we haven’t known each other for very long…" he began, but lost the words.
"What is time? It is irrelevant." Banshea smiled softly. "It is all in how you look at it. From the right angle, there is no difference between time past and time not yet to come. It overlaps, becomes the same moment. We can relive time lost, so it is never really lost."
Brooklyn was surprised. "You, you remember?"
Banshea shook her head. "Not everything, but one thing I do." She leaned forward, hugged him, and whispered in his ear. "I love you, too."
The pair embraced one another. They had each come to the end of a quest that had brought them past the realm of mortals, across continents and across time, but in the end, they found one another, although neither had realized before that the one that they now held was the ultimate goal. In fact, neither had known that they were on a quest. But this was journey’s end, though not the end of the story. Far from it. It was a new beginning.
