Chapter Five

As Banshea came to, the first thing she noticed was that it was very cold. Cold is not a problem to gargoyles: they survive things that would kill lesser creatures; however, not all gargoyles like cold, and Banshea preferred the tropics.

Her eyes fluttered and opened, and as she looked around, all she could see was ice. She was in a small chamber made of ice. The chamber opened into a larger room made of ice. The bars that kept her in the chamber were made of ice. Everything that she could see was made of ice, save for the gargoyle that just then entered the room outside her prison cell.

The other gargoyle was tall, possibly taller than Banshea. Her skin, hair and eyes were dark to contrast the white of the ice and snow in her surroundings. She was graceful and regal, and the white caftan she wore was just as graceful as it billowed and trailed behind her every step. It was none other than Casha, the Ice Queen.

"Casha, why am I here?" Banshea stormed. "I thought that you protected my sisters and me!"

"Watch your temper, Banshea, or I’ll have to cool you off. I brought you here for the good of your rookery sisters and to protect you," came the calm reply.

"Protect me?!? From who?"

"From yourself."

Banshea sat and fumed in anger.

"Careful, ‘Hothead’ or you might melt your cell and drown yourself," Casha chided. "By the way, I made sure that the Phoenix Gate would not work from that cell, as I found that I could not remove it."

-So, to get out of here I have to get out of this cell, Banshea thought. As Casha turned and began to leave the room, she heard the sound of dripping water. Quickly, she spun around. However, she was too late. Shrieking with rage, Banshea leapt upon Casha, pinning her to the ground. Casha noticed that Banshea, in her anger, had sparked a wall of blue fire behind her.

"If I ever see you again, you are a piece of charcoal!" Banshea cried through clenched teeth. She was breathing heavily.

"Banshea, you are not well. Please, I can help you."

"You’re going to be beyond help if you ever try this again!" With that, Banshea left in the ball of flames characteristic of the Phoenix Gate; her blue fire soon fizzled out, although leaving considerable damage to the room. Casha made no attempt to find her at the moment: given Banshea’s state of mind, such a threat was not to be taken lightly.

Mikaia, Shaunsha, and the rest of the clan were looking for Banshea when Casha suddenly appeared.

"I know where Banshea is," she told them.

Though warned that they would be of little help, Goliath, Lilah, Brooklyn, and the others wanted to aid Mikaia and Shaunsha, but in the end they were overruled.
