Matrix In The Classroom

It appears that the world of the Matrix is inspiring students and teachers alike! More and more, "The Matrix" is being discussed, examined, and written about in philosophy, religion, computer, english, and film classes. For instance, University of Hartford's Professor Stuart Dalton teaches a class titled "Philosophy In Films" and "The Matrix" is one of the movies that his students are required to study as part of the course.

Personally, I find this growing trend really exciting because I think that discussing and analyzing "The Matrix" in the classroom is an excellent idea! There is so much that all of us can learn from this movie amazing movie.

Below are just 2 of the emails that I have received from teachers:

"I teach a philosophy course at the Minnesota School of Business, a two-year proprietary college with several business and technology majors. My introductory piece is always Plato's Allegory of the Cave. One of my students, a good student who has some interesting comments, brought me your site after we had discussed Plato. I have never seen The Matrix, but was interested in your thoughtful comparison to Plato, and was inspired to rent it. Perhaps I will even use the movie as an interpretive aid, something that will appeal to my visual learners." --Mr. Ostroot, May 18, 2000

"I am an adjunct professor at Jacksonville University(Jax. Fl.) I tutor students in our Writing Lab. There is an assignment in the freshman Philosophy class to compare Plato's Cave to The Matrix. Read the site to get some information to assist students. Very helpful." --Wilene, February 23, 2002

Thanks so much for your feedback and kind words! And for all of you students and teachers out there who have Matrix classroom stories to share, please be sure to email them to me via by feedback form. Thanks!

I don't mind if you email me and ask an educational question regarding "The Matrix." However, keep these thoughts in mind:

Silly or vague questions like "I have to write a paper on The Matrix--what should I write about?" will be ignored. If you need some topic ideas to get you started, please look at this page. In any case, be sure you let your teacher know what you plan on writing about so that you can be assured that your topic is appropriate for the assignment.

Keep in mind that I don't always check my email box every day. Therefore, please don't email me the night before a paper is due and demand an immediate response because that may not happen.

Try to be as specific as possible and include details (what class this is for, the requirements, etc.)

Sorry, but I don't write papers or proofread them. If I can, I'll try to point you in a direction or give you a general idea to get you started but that's about it.

Remember that any responses that I give are only my opinions (which means that they aren't necessarily right or what your teacher wants) and they are copyrighted.

And lastly, no, I don't have any connections to anyone in hollywood or the literary field nor do I have any knowledge about getting a book, magazine, or screenplay published/produced. BTW, I'm not a teacher either :)
