Have you ever really been excited about something that required tickets? You panic to the moment its in your hands, but even after you have your ticket you guard it with your life. You set wondering what you would do if you lost it or if it was stolen or maybe even ponder the fact "What if You Never Got Tickets". I know I've been in that situation many a times so the premise for Detroit Rock City suckerd me into the theater. The plot envolves four members of a high school wanna be rockin roll band who get their hands on tickets to see Kiss in Detriot. Every thing goes a miss when the tickets are stolen and burned by a holy roller mother played by Lin Shaye. You might reconize her as the saggy boobie lady in There's Something About Mary or the nasty hag landlord in KingPin. The middle of the movie has them desperatley searching for a way into the concert. They split up and go on four journeys to find tickets. One goes the beat up a little and steal his ticket route, one tries to sneak in, the third decides to enter a stripping contest, while the other gets laid in side of a church confessional booth. Sounds pretty interesting right? Well sort of but the idea alone of a bunch of cool rockin roll 70's kids smokin up and jamming hard did'nt make this a crowd pleaser for me.

This is one you dont want to rent unless your really really bored or really really really really like Kiss. While the 70's nostalga rates very well through out the film its campy humor brought it out of the 70's and turned it into a cartoon of sorts. The members of Kiss as no real role in the film as one might expect. They don't utter one line on screen unless you count their songs the youths listen to through out the jounery. Their methods of trying to getting tickets were fairly amusing but nothing more than a chuckle. The movie seemed to be made only to make people remember how controversial Kiss was in the 70's. Which seems really tame compared to all the gothic bands of today. The film also takes time out to make disco fans look like real pricks. While not a fan of disco I still dont see why there is a reason to attack it. In Mystery Men the bad guys were also disco freaks. Maybe this is a new trend, Hollywood is running out of great bad guys so there turning to disco as the enemy. On the upside there are a few nice shots of some nude big titty bitches, but just for a few fleeting seconds at a time. Near the end of the movie everyone seems to get some putty cat and lose thier virginity. Shit if you want to see that watch American Pie! So take my advice and stay away from Detroit Rock Shity........aaaaa...I mean City.
