Captain Crewe (Liam Cunningham)
Captain Crewe is Sara's widower father and an officer in the Royal British Army. After his wife passed away, Sara became the centre of his life and he concentrated all his efforts into raising and caring for her. Due to the success of his business dealings in India, Captain Crewe managed to amass a large fortune. Captain Crewe sends Sara to a girls boarding school in New York which his late wife had attended when she was about Sara's age when he is called to serve in World War I.
During a battle in the trenches of Europe, Captain Crewe succumbs to the effects of nerve gas while trying to help a fellow soldier John Randolph (Ken Palmer) who is seriously wounded.
Captain Crewe is declared killed in action and all his assets are seized by the British government, leaving Sara penniless and destitute.
Unknown to everyone else, Captain Crewe is found seriously injured, suffering from temporary blindness and amnesia and is brought to a hospital in New York. Charles Randolph (Arthur Malet) who is the father of John Randolph goes to the same New York hospital after his son is declared missing in action to look for his son. Disappointed that Captain Crewe is not his son, he starts to leave but decides to bring Captain Crewe to his home which happens to be right next to the seminary which Sara attends and take care of him in the hopes that he knows of the fate of his missing son.
Eventually Captain Crewe regains his memory and sight but still doesn't remember his daughter until one night when Sara accidently stumbles in on him in the sitting room of the house when she tries to escape the police after being falsely accused of stealing. Sara recognizes her father but he doesn't remember who she is until the last moment with the help of Ram Dass (Errol Sitahal) after the police take her away.
Captain Crewe eventually reclaims his assets and returns to India with Sara and his adopted daughter Becky (Vanessa Lee Chester).
