Here are some parts of very old (11/95) Bon Jovi FAQ (compiled by Kurt Torster Jr.) which was posted to old Wanted...Bon Jovi mailing list....

FAQ's and info: =============== Q. What was Jon's first professional recording? - Jon appeared (as John Bongiovi) on a Star Wars Christmas album "Christmas With the Stars" and does the lead vocal on a track called "R2-D2 We Wish You a Merry Christmas". The album was produced by John's cousin Tony Bongiovi at the Power Station in New York. The album was released on the RSO label and is not available on CD. Q. What about early Richie Sambora recordings? - Richie, along with Alec, was a member of the band "The Message" that had an album, "Lessons" out on a local label. It was recently rereleased on CD through Long Island Records. The Message also featured vocalist Dean Fasano, who later became lead vocalist for NJ favorites, Prophet. Q. So, when was Bon Jovi formed? - BJ was formed in 1983 after Jon recruited friend David Bryan. The rest of the band followed after the success of the "Runaway" single. Q. You mean the band isn't on the "Runaway" single? What's the deal with that? - Well, there once was a NYC radio station, WAPP, which is now a country station by the way. They had a contest to search for the best unsigned band. Jon went to the Record Plant, a studio in NYC that his cousin worked at. He used studio musicians to play on the track. After it won the contest, it quickly became the most popular song in NYC in the summer of '83. Jon quickly put a band together to tour and try and get a record deal. Polygram signed them and released "Bon Jovi" in 1984. "Runaway" was never recorded with the current band, though at one time there were plans to put a "Runaway '94" on "Crossroad". Q. Who did play on "Runaway" then? - Listed as The All Star Review, it consisted on Tim Piece on guitar, Roy Bittan on keyboards, Frankie Larocka on drums and Hugh Macdonald on bass. Q. What's the deal with "She Don't Know Me"? Why won't they play it in concert? - "She Don't Know Me" originally appeared on an album by Frankie And The Knockouts called "Making The Point". It was called "You Don't Want Me". The lyrics were changed by Marc Avsec and became "She Don't Know Me". Jon refuses to perform it in concert as it's the only song to appear on a BJ album that wasn't written by the band. Tico Torres, BJ drummer, was a member of Frankie and The Knockouts. Q. Who is Mark Avesec? - He's a songwriter best known for playing with midwest rocker Donnie Iris. Donnie was once a member of Wild Cherry ("Play That Funky Music") and The Jaggerz ("The Rapper"). Q. Who is Jack Ponti? - Jack is another NJ musician that Jon was friends with. He helped with the writing on "Bon Jovi". He's recorded with three bands: Surgin (who do a cover of "Shot Through The Heart"), Shark Island and Baton Rouge. Q. Who is David Rashbaum? - He's David Bryan! His full name is David Bryan Rashbaum, but was changed after the the release of "Bon Jovi" to sound more rock and roll. Q. What does 7800 Fahrenheit mean? - It's the melting point of rock. Get it? Q. Who is Heavy Pettin? Why should I care? - Heavy Pettin were a Scottish band also signed to Polygram. They sounded a lot like Def Leppard. Anyways, they claim that BJ ripped off "In And Out Of Love" from their song "In And Outta Love". I've heard both versions. The choruses ARE very similar, but that's about it. Q. Where was "In And Out Of Love" filmed? - That particular video was filmed on the boardwalk of Seaside Heights, NJ...an early stomping ground for the band. Q. What's with the beginning of "Tokyo Road"? There's a story that goes: during a Japanese concert, a young girl threw a music box on the stage. This particular box played the same tune that is now the intro. Q. Who is Black And Blue? Why should I care? - Black And Blue were an Los Angeles band on Geffen. The story goes that Jon had heard a tape of their album "Without Love" and was so impressed that he had to find out who the producer was. Turns out that it was none other than Bruce Fairbairn who would go on to produce megaplatinum albums for Bon Jovi and Aerosmith, among others. Q. Why have I seen two different covers for "Slippery When Wet"? - Polygram US thought that the original cover, featuring a well endowed woman, would be too sexist for the US market. So it was changed to the album title, written on a wet plastic garbage bag. The album's original cover is available in other countries. Q. What is "Pink Flamingos"? - "Pink Flamingos" was the title of the keyboard instrumental that precedes "Let It Rock". Pink flamingos are actually lawn ornaments that is quite common on the lawns of Jersey white trash (no offense intended). Q. Who is Captain Kid and The King Of Swing? - Captian Kid is Jon and The King Of Swing is Richie. Q. What's that at the beginning of "Social Disease"? - After a heavy petting session a woman screams "you mean that's it?". Q. What does Jon scream at the end of "Raise Your Hands"? - Jon starts rapping off names of cities: New York, Detroit, Vancouver, Edmonton, Sayerville NJ, Phoenix. Q. Who is Desmond Child? - Desmond Child was a semi-successful disco artist back in the 70's. He also did the music for the movie "The Warriors". His songwriting career took a HUGE leap when he wrote "I Was Made For Loving You" for Kiss. Jon befriended the songwriter and he helped push the sales of SWW well over the ten million mark with cowrites on "You Give Love A Bad Name" and "Living On A Prayer". Desmond released an album back in 1992 called "Discipline" which features some of BJ in one capacity or another. Q. What's the Cinderella connection? - Jon is often credited with discovering this Philadelphia band. That's only partially true. Cinderella were a pretty big club band that Jon saw playing one night and helped them to get a record deal. Jon and Richie also appear in Cinderella's "Save Me" video. Cinderella opened the majority of the "Slippery When Wet" tour. Q. What is the pizza palor jury? - The PPJ is a group of friends, kids and whoever is around that get to hear new Bon Jovi music as they finish recording it. The boys usually take a tape of new music to a NJ pizza palor and play it for reaction. This has helped shape the song content on "Slippery When Wet", "New Jersey" and "Keep The Faith". Q. What about "Diamond Ring"? - "Diamond Ring" is a song that has been around on demo tapes since the SWW era. According to Jon "it's a great song, it just never seems to fit the albums". It was finally to be included on KTF, Jon even said they meant to write the album around that one, but when they were done, it didn't fit again. The song is kicking around on various demos, and Jon and Richie also performed it live on the radio during the 12/14/92 Rockline show, and again on Rockline 10/24/94. It has finally been included on "These Days". Q. Is it true that Bon Jovi started the Unplugged revolution? - Well, they certainly had a hand in it. Jon and Richie performed "Living On A Prayer" and "Wanted Dead Or Alive" on the 1987 MTV Awards show acoustically. It was such a success that the channel soon after started "Unplugged". Although no one at the channel will admit it, if this performance never took place, I doubt anyone would have unplugged at all. Q. What's the deal with Doc McGhee and all that anti-drug stuff? - Doc McGhee is Bon Jovi's manager (who was also Motley Crue's manager at one time). He was busted for bringing a large amount (40,000 pounds!) of pot into the US. His punishment was to donate a large sum of money to anti-drug causes and stage an anti-drug concert. This became the Moscow Music And Peace Festival which Bon Jovi headlined. The album "Stairway To Heaven, Highway To Hell" was also part of this. He is no longer the band's manager, although Richie still retains him as a solo artist. Q. Who is Howard Stern? Why should I care? - Howard is a NYC radio personality whose show BJ was on a lot. But when they hit it big with SWW, they stopped going on the show and this started a feud. Sam Kinison eventually helped patch things up and BJ now appear on the show again, last performing an acoustic set for Howard's birthday. At one point, Howard had Jon and Richie on Dial-A-Date and fixed them up with lesbians. For more on Howard Stern, check alt.fan.howard-stern. Q. Who is Sam Kinison? - Sam is (or was) the rock and roll comedian. One of the funniest men (in his prime) to ever do stand up, he was friends with the band and even starred in the "Bad Medicine" video. Richie played guitar on Sam's single "Wild Thing". Q. What's with the "Bad Medicine" video? - BJ gave video cameras to everyone who attended a free concert given by the band and told people to film whatever they wanted. The band took this footage and created two videos for the song. Q. There's also two videos of "Living In Sin"? Why? - Well, it seems that the MTV censors thought that one scene of the video was too steamy (where the priest is putting bread into the mouth of the girl). So, they simply used a close up of the girl instead. To this day, I can't figure out who thought this but... Q. What's Jon saying at the beginning of "Lay Your Hands On Me"? - The nearest I can figure is "They say you gotta move to free your body, you gotta free your mind, so come on...check this out." Q. What's the story with "Cadillac Man"? - "Cadillac Man" is a song that was written for the 1990 movie of the same name. It was never included on the soundtrack, but is available on various bootlegs. Q. Did Bon Jovi actually break up after the "New Jersey" tour? - Well, it would have appeared that way, with both Jon and Richie releasing solo albums. Sebastian Bach (Skid Row) helped perpetuate those rumours by saying that Jon and Richie had a major blowout over the handling of Skid Row's publishing. These rumours were just that. Rumours. Q. What's "The Underground"? - It's Jon and Richie's music publishing company. Q. What's the Skid Row connection? - Skid Row is another band that Jon helped to get signed. Dave Sabo (guitarist) was Jon's childhood neighbor. Skid Row were signed to The Underground. Since then, most ties between the two bands has all but deteriorated. Skid Row claims that Jon and Richie owe them money. Jon and Richie came to blows after Richie gave Skid Row his share of the money. Jon did not and to this day, things are edgy between Jon and Skid Row. In fact, the liner notes for the new Skid Row album, "Subhuman Race", thank Richie but no mention of Jon. Q. Who are some of the stars that helped out Jon on "Blaze Of Glory"? - Kenny Aronoff (John Mellencamp), Randy Jackson (Journey), Elton John, Benmont Tench (the Heartbreakers), Danny Kortchmar, Aldo Nova, Jeff Beck, Lou Diamond Phillips, Robbin Crosby (Ratt), Waddy Wachtel (Stevie Nicks). Q. Was Jon actually in Young Guns 2? - Yup...look real closely at the escape scene in the beginning of the film. He gets shot and falls into a water trough. Ally Sheedy (former girlfriend of Richie Sambora) introduced Jon to Emilio Estevez, star of the movie. Q. Who helped Richie on "Stranger In This Town"? - Eric Clapton, Randy Jackson, Frankie Previte (the Knockouts), Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel), Dave and Tico. Q. Didn't Richie do a beer commercial? - Yes, Richie did a Michelob commercial. The song "One Light Burning" was used as Richie leaned against a lampost playing guitar. In a similar vein, Richie also did a commercial for Snapple Iced Tea. Q. Who is Diane Warren? - Diane helped pen "Rosie" for Richie's album, along with Jon and Desmond. Diane is probably most famous for her work with Michael Bolton and writing "When I See You Smile" which was performed by Bad English. Q. Wasn't "Keep The Faith" supposed to have been a double album? - Yes, but the personnel over at Polygram thought that it would never sell and convinced the band to cut it to a single CD. All the leftover tracks were released as B-sides. Q. Then what is the "Keep The Faith" mega-edtion? - In Japan and parts of Europe, KTF was released as a double CD with two extra tracks on the album and a bonus live CD. The Japanese version has an acoustic version of "Bed Of Roses" while the European version has a live acoustic version of "Never Say Goodbye". Q. What's this about a Spanish version of "Bed Of Roses"? - Called "Cama De Rosas", it's available on the "Keep The Faith" video collection. It got a fair amount of play on the Box, a pay-per-view music video network in the US. Q. Isn't there a dance remix of "Keep The Faith"? - Yes, the song was remixed by members of Jesus Jones, but it was never released. Q. Who is Jesus Jones? - They were an early '90's one hit wonder. You might remember their song "Right Here, Right Now". Q. What about the remix of "I Believe"? - Remixed by Bob Clearmountain (best known for his work with Bryan Adams), it's pushed the guitars WAY up in the mix. Q. Who helped out David on "On A Full Moon"? - Edgar Winter, Nancy Buchan, Troy Turner, Harold Scott, Stanley Watson. The album includes a cover of "In These Arms". Q. Why isn't Alec in the band anymore? - According to Jon, Alec just wasn't into it anymore. He needed some time off for family and things. He has an open invitation to rejoin at any time. Q. So who replaced him? - Well, officially, no one. But unofficially Hugh MacDonald is the new bassist. As you have read above, Hugh originally played on "Runaway". There are rumours that Hugh has played bass on all BJ albums, with Alec as the touring bassist. This is unconfirmed. Q. Was "Always" actually written for a movie? - Yes it was. It was written for "Romeo Is Bleeding" but Jon pulled it after Jon saw an advance of the movie. Q. Who's that guy in the "Always" video? - That's Jack Noseworthy, who starred in the MTV series "Dead At 21" and "The Brady Bunch Movie". Q. Where's that diner located on the cover of "CrossRoad"? - It's the Roadside Diner in Wall Township, NJ, near the "crossroads" of Route 33 and 34. The diner is right off the rotary at this intersection. Q. What is Jambco? - Jambco is Jon and Richie's publishing company and music label. Q. What artists are on Jambo? - Currently two. Billy Falcon and Aldo Nova. Jon co-produced Billy Falcon's "Pretty Blue World" album with Danny Kortchmar. Q. Jon, the actor? - Jon has a starring role in the recently released "Moonlight And Valentino", where he plays a house painter. He also will be in "The Leading Man", playing a charismatic chameleon-like character who has a magnetic effect on those around him. Jon was also up for the lead in "The Crow 2" but didn't get the role. Q. What happened at the Letterman show? - Bon Jovi recently played on the Late Show With David Letterman, playing outside the theater in the streets of New York city. Little Steven joined them for "This Ain't A Love Song" and "Someday I'll Be Saturday Night". Q. Didn't Bon Jovi play the opening for the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame? - Bon Jovi recently took part in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Concert at Cleveland's Municipal Stadium, playing "With A Little Help From My Friends", along with an Animals medly featuring guest Eric Burden of the original Animals. (Eric didn't show up in person when he was inducted, but was drawn to the incredible line-up at this show). The house band will featured Steve Cropper, Jim Keltner and Duck Dunn among others. Jon also performed with the legendary Little Richard, and brought the house down when he and Richie played a touching version of John Lennon's "Imagine." Q. And they played the MTV Awards again? - Yup...they played to a few thousand people in Times Square, New York. "Helter Skelter" and "Something For The Pain" was broadcast live over MTV for the awards show on September 8, 1995. Q. Who are those people that are spoofed in the "Something For The Pain" video? - That would be: Dr. Dre, Courtney Love (Hole), Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots) and Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam). -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fan club info: ============== Official Fan Clubs: Backstage with Jon Bon Jovi P.O.
