You may think that Rebecca Herbst is, shall we say, lucky just by virtue of the facts that she has earned the respect of her peers (she recently was nominated for a Daytime Emmy) for her work as a popular character (plucky Elizabeth) on a hit soap (GH) opposite a dynamic leading man (Jonathan Jackson) But that would only be half of her story. You see, when she's finished with a hard day on the set, she gets to retreat to a country-style home on the outskirts of Los Angeles - and to the comfort of her family. Here, she takes Soap In Depth on the tour of the house that is her haven away from Port Charles, and introduces the people who keep it warm with love.

The house has two fireplaces, but this one in the den is where Herbst puts in quality time studying her GH scripts.

The actress isn't the only member of her family who has spent time in the spotlight. In fact, this book is Huckle Buckle Beanstock, written by her grandfather, M. William Herbst.

The animal lover has four pets - a rabbit, named Bun-A-Bun, a squirrel named Beekers, and two Labradors, Cougar and Gibson (in the photo above). "We named him after Mel Gibson," she says. "My mom liked the name Gibson, and Mel Gibson is one of both of our favorite actors."

Every night is sports night at the Herbst house. The whole family is very athletic - especially dad Wayne, who plays basketball two evenings a week on a team. "But", jokes his daughter, "I think he gives us a bit of a break {when we play}."

"At least a couple of times a week, we all get together and cool lunch or dinner," says Herbst. "We all have little jobs to do. Dad's a great cook, Mom's great with planning and preparing .. I get stuck with the menial jobs like setting the table!"
