"Painful Reality"

Sometimes, though, those issues can hit a little too close to home. Daytime viewers sometimes complain the soap characters are all too often the victims of rape. But, sadly, too many viewers related to these kinds of stories.
"At least half of the letters I've gotten have come from girls who've had rape experiences in their won lives," says GENERAL HOSPITAL's Rebecca Herbst (Lizzie), whose character was sexually assaulted early last year. Herbist's storyline unfolded in two explosive ways: It led to the long-overdue exploration of Luke's rape of Laura 20 years ago, and it also sent Liz on a dangerous crusade to track down her rapist, who is now safe behind bars.
Through real-life survivors most certainly should not try to track down their rapists themselves, viewers have applauded Liz's search for justice.
'Fans have been extremely supportive of the storyline," Herbist reports. "I haven't receive one negative letter."
Viewers have also been inspired by Liz's slow-but-steady progress through the trauma of rape and recovery. "A lot of letters have said, ‘If Liz can get through this, then I can, too,'" Herbist says. "I get the sense from the letters that watching Liz makes them feel they're not doing it all alone."
