Based on the legendary computer game, the time is set in
2654. As the alien race Kilrathi threatens human existance,
three brave young space pilots and their elite squadron
stand in the way. With an on screen team of Freddie Prinze
Jr. as Christopher Blair and Matthew Lilliard as Todd
Marshall, this movie is a can't miss! Togeather,
they hook up with Jeanette Deveraux and as a triple team,
those space aliens are history! However, with
nothing but their dare devil attitudes in common, this
invincible alien force is a driving threat! Also, adding
a little juice to the plot, Jeanette experiences a growing
attraction towards Christopher Blair! Will they get togeather?
Are they brave enough to defeat the terrible space aliens?
Will they save the planet? Well, I know the answers, but do YOU?
From start to finish, this flick is an action packed thrill
ride. Minus the obvious (cute actors), this film also
has an interesting plot. However, I must comment
that at times, the plot is a little hard to follow. Nevertheless,
I think they might have done that on purpose to add and
air of mysterioso. Furthermore, it produces several
characters that you really don't care about. Although
most girls WILL probrably be bias since almost all who
belong to the female population have an automatic "I care about
Freddie Prinze Jr." mechanism, most of the other characters
are a little prosaic. However, I think characterization
is one of the only departments in which it's lacking, from
a writing standpoint. However, this lack of characterization
cannot be taken out on the actors and actresses! On the other hand, if your going
to see a fun, action packed, sci-fi thriller, I think
Wing Commander is an excellent film and I would then
recommend it! Sometimes, we're not necessarily in the mood
for an academy award winning movie which Wing Commander
certainly is not, but we actually want to see a movie
that's just fun, where we don't need to think.
Freddie Prinze Jr. did a fabulous job in portraying his
character (once again)! I don't know about you ladies,
but I personally think he's actually got a lot more to him than suave
looks and a cute smile.
But seriously now, his acting talent is far superior to
the exterior. As a fresh out of military school youth,
he's down to Earth, brave, and has the "Pilgrim" attitude.
However, as a half-bred pilgrim, Christopher Blair is resented
and often looked down upon for his heritage. Prinze does a great
job in portraying the inner pain and frustration at this,
as well as the character consequences of growing up without
parents. On the other side, as a soldier, Freddie Prinze Jr. portrays
quite nicely that inner fire and passion that he has for
space, and adventure. Even though the development of his
relationship with Angel was almost non-existant, it's still
cute, and while in some flicks, the fact that "they never
really got to know each other," bothers you,
it's almost as if you don't care in this one.
Your just happy they got togeather... which brings us to Saffron Burrows.
Playing a female Wing Commander, Miss. Burrows does an
awesome job in showing us a tough exterior,
but at the same time, a "I'm just going to melt down and cry" interior. With
all the commotion going on in the flick, you don't really
get a chance to actually see "physically" her emotional
attachment to Christopher Blair. Even though you do get the
feeling she no longer HATES him, it's almost as if you can't
tell weather or not she likes him in "that way." However,
I do consequently think that it's a part of her character
as well. From losing her lover in war to the Kilrathi, to
losing both her parents in battle as well, her character
was meant to hide emotion and try to almost bury it beneath
that tough exterior. So if you think of it in that sense, then Saffron
Burrows did an average job!
Overall, Wing Commander is a nice movie. Even though
it's no Titanic, or Shindler's List, it's still fun, easy
to watch, and a pretty good teen flick. If your completely
not into and against sci-fi, I don't necessarily recommend it. However,
if you don't mind it, or you occasionly enjoy a techno flick
or two, you'll definately find this film largely entertaining.
Then again, if you don't go for the story line, hey! Go for
the hot guys. Oh yeah.. and for you guys, well, there's
fighting, and blowing up, and aliens... oh yeah, and there's
Saffron Burrows too.. if that's your type.
