I’ll Be Back
By Kata
Star Trek belongs to Paramount, the story belongs to me. I got this idea when I first heard Terry Farell was leaving, way before I’d even heard about "Tears of the Prophets." And Jadzia’s a month pregnant with twins.
Captain Benjamin Sisko sighed, it was going to be one of those days. All of his crew seemed to be upset. Kira was angry because the Kai was on the station, Odo was angry because Kira was angry, O’Brian had had some kind of argument with Keiko, and he didn’t even know why Worf and Dax were angry. Ever since last month, when they had found out Dax was pregnant, they had been more happy than anyone else on the station. The only member of his crew who seemed realitivly normal was Dr. Bashir. As the shift wore on, no one seemed to be able to get anything done. Worf and Dax wouldn’t cooperate with each other at all. Kira was too angry to get anything done, and O’Brian wasn’t much better. Finally Sisko couldn’t take it anymore. "Old man, can I talk to you in my office?" Sisko asked. "Sure," Dax said, looking puzzled. As soon as they were both in the office, Dax asked, "What’s wrong, Benjamin?" The captain raised his eyebrows, "That’s what I want to know." "What do you mean?" "Why is everyone on the station angry?" Dax shrugged, "I hadn’t noticed anything." "Kira’s upset about the Kai, Odo’s mad because she is, the Chief had an argument with his wife..." "That’s not too unusual." "And," Benjamin continued, "you and Worf are at each others throats." "Oh," Jadzia said looking at her hands. "You’ve been so happy since you found out you were pregnant. What happened?" Jadzia sighed and started pacing around the office, "Worf wants me to go to Earth, while I’m pregnant. He says the station's not safe enough, with the war going on. He wants me to stay with his parents." "Why don’t you want to?" Benjamin asked. "He’s right, you know, especially since know you know you’re going to have twins." "I’m fine. Starfleet allows pregnant woman to work." "Not during a war!" "Benjamin, I’m fine!" "What if the station gets attacked?" "You’re as bad as Worf!" Jadzia accused. "Probably worse. Worf’s afraid for you, old man. And I know why. Remember my wife died during a battle. Do you want that to happen to you?" "No, but... I’ve had nine children!" "Dax has had nine children, Jadzia hasn’t," Benjamin pointed out. "And none of them were half-Klingon. The doctor told you there could be complications. And it’s not just you who doesn’t like this, I’m sure Worf will miss you, too." "I know, I know, " Jadzia said. "Listen, I don’t want to bother you with my problems, with the Kai on the station and all." "I’m your friend," Benjamin told her. "I’ll always be there for you." "Thanks," Jadzia said. "What does the Kai want anyway?" "I think she’s just ‘honoring’ us with her presence." "Your favorite kind of visit." "Right," Benjamin smiled ruefully. "Now, you get back to work, and as soon as your shift is over, talk to Worf, okay?" "All right," Jadzia sighed. "But if you her smashing sounds coming from our quarters, don’t worry!" Jadzia walked out of the office, and decided she would talk to Worf. The problem was they both had quick tempers, and didn’t always listen to each other. As she walked by Kira, she heard a whisper, "What did he want?" "Just a chat. He wanted to know why Worf and I were mad at each other." "Did you tell him?" Jadzia had told Kira about her and Worf's argument that morning. "Yes, you know I would’ve anyway." "So, what are you going to do?" Before Jadzia could answer, Worf’s deep voice cut into their conversation, "Op’s is for working, not for gossiping." Jadzia rolled her eyes at him, "Yes, sir." Then whispered to Kira, "Talk to you later!" Kira nodded. As soon as the shift was over, and the next shift had taken over, the senior staff had piled into the turbolift. Worf got off on the Promenade, and started walking away, but Dax’s voice stopped him, "Worf, wait!" He turned to look at her. "Jadzia." "We need to talk." "I suppose so." "Can we go to our quarters?" Jadzia asked. "Everyone’s looking at us." "Yes." The two walked in silence to their quarters. As soon as they were inside, Jadzia confronted the issue, "Worf, I know why you want me to leave the station, but I love it her." "You will be safer on Earth." "Worf, I barely know your parents!" "You’ve met them. They like you." "We met over subspace!" "Jadzia, you can’t stay on the station!" "Worf, I’m fine." "Now, but the doctor said it would be a difficult pregnancy, especially now that you’re having twins." "He said it might be," Jadzia pointed out. "And it hasn’t been so far." "Jadzia, in a couple of months, you won’t be able to work, anyway. And what if the Dominion attack?" Worf asked. "I do not want to lose you!" Worf had sat down on the couch, and Jadzia went over and sat on his lap. "Why should you? I'll be perfectly fine. We’ve survived Dominion attacks before." "Not when your were pregnant." "I know," Dax said. "But I’ll be bored on Earth." Worf could see she was weakening, "Jadzia, Starfleet had lots of work that doesn’t require being on a space station or a starship." "And I’d miss you," Jadzia said, placing a kiss on his forehead. "I’ll miss you, as well." "You know," Jadzia admitted, "I think Ben wants me to go, too." "You talked to the Captain?" Worf asked, looking a little displeased. "Worf, I tell Ben practically everything!" "You tell everyone practically everything," Worf protested, than got the conversation back on track. "Now, will you go?" "Worf, I don’t know... a strange planet..." "You’ve been to Earth before." "No one, I know...." "I"ve never known you to be shy." "Worf, how do your parents honestly feel about this? Wouldn’t it just be a burden on them, a pregnant woman, who they barely knew?" "Jadzia, my parents want to get to know you. Ever since I told them I had started seeing someone, they have begged me to meet you." Jadzia smiled. It was amazing how close Worf and his parents were. She hadn’t even told her parents about her dates when she lived at home! "Worf, I don’t know...." Worf took Jadzia’s hand and put it on her stomach, "Do it for our children, Jadzia." Jadzia smiled, and finally relented, "All right, Worf, for our children." Worf gave her one of his almost-smiles, then pulled her close to him and kissed her. "I’m really going to miss you," Jadzia said. "And I, you." It was the next day. Jadzia was walking along the Promenade, when she heard someone call her name, "Dax! Wait up!" Dax turned to see Kira rushing up to her. "Jadzia! What’s this I hear about you leaving the station?" Kira asked. "Where’d you hear that?" Jadzia asked in surprise. "Worf. You’re not going to tell me he’s lying are you?" Kira teased. "Of course not! I’m just normally the one who has to tell our news." "I know, I know. So, you’re going to Earth?" the Major asked, as the two started walking along the Promenade. "Yes, Worf and I contacted his parents last night, and they said they would love to have me." "When are you leaving?" "Worf wants it to be soon. Two days." "Are you going to be ready by then?" "I guess." After walking in silence for a while, Kira said, "You don’t sound very happy to be leaving." Jadzia sighed, she should have know Kira would guess her true feelings. "I guess I’m not. It was Worf’s idea, really. He doesn’t think it’s safe for me on the station." "He’s right." Jadzia began to protest, but Kira held up her hand, "Trust me, after all, I was pregnant on the station remember, and there wasn’t even a war going on." "Yes, I know that in here," Jadzia said, pointing to her head, "but not in here," she finished pointing to her heart. "We’ll miss you," Kira told her, trying to offer a comforting word. "I know. Anyway, don’t tell Worf, but I want to come back here, and have my babies on the station." "Jadzia!" "Why not? I’ll be there home." Kira shook her head, and then decided to give up the matter. "Where are you heading to anyway?" "Garak’s shop. Worf told me I could buy whatever I want," Jadzia smiled wickedly. "Want to come?" "Sure." The two woman spent an hour looking at clothes, picking some for now, some for later in her pregnancy, and some for after she had the babies. Two days later, Jadzia was packed and leaving the station. Her friends had all gathered by the turbolift to say good-bye to her, even Quark had come. Chief O’Brien was the first to say a reluctant good-bye. "We’ll miss you," he offered. "Take care of those babies, all right?" Jadzia nodded and smiled weakly, giving the Chief a hug. Julian was next. "It wouldn’t be the same without Worf dragging you in for appoitments," he told her. "I’ll be back," Jadzia told him, and gave him a hug as well. "Stay safe, okay?" Quark said, not knowing how to say a proper good-bye. "And when you get back, I might even let you have a few drinks on the house." Jadzia nodded, "I’ll remember that." Even Odo offered a good-bye. "The station won’t be the same without you," he admitted. Kira gave her a hug, "I don’t know who I'll gossip with at Ops, while you’re not here." Jadzia tried to smile, only to find herself on the verge of tears, and turned to Captain Sisko, the next person waiting to tell her good-bye. "I’ll keep your place open for you, old man," Benjamin told her. "Thanks," Jadzia whispered, giving him a hug, knowing that she would break into tears as soon as she said good-bye to the next person- Worf. "Remember, I love you, par’machi," he told her. Jadzia felt tears coming down her face. "I don’t know what I’ll do without you she said," throwing her arms around him, and kissing him. Worf gently removed her arms from around him. "The transport’s leaving, Jadzia." Jadzia turned to see it was true. "Good-bye," she told everyone again, giving Worf one last kiss. "Remember- I’ll be back!" And Jadzia turned and walked down the airlock, turning and blowing kisses all the way, until she had disappeared from view.
The End?
