Part one by Naomi

Jadzia ran as hard as she could. She had to get to the transporter room before he caught up with her! If she made it she could certainly use that trick Smilie had shown her and run all the way to the other side. There was no way the Regent could find her there! Her heart was pounding so hard, Jadzia thought it would beat out of her chest...

There, up ahead, was Terok Nor's transporter room. Her hand went automatically to her hip and she pulled her disruptor as she turned the corner. She fired the weapon twice and killed the two Cardassian guards. Coldly she stepped on one corpse to reach the controls; her fingers nimbly dancing over the console, setting up her escape. She ran over to the transporter pad and disappeared in a shimmer of gold.

=/\=

Worf was at his station in Ops, attempting to decode a message sent by USS Sutherland. If it was another condolence message, wishing him sympathy about Jadzia's death, the warrior in him would want to pound the console to a pulp! Yet, he would temper it, like the good little Starfleet officer he was... Worf sighed as he managed to break the encryption matrix.

"Something wrong, Commander?" came the caring voice of Major Kira.

She and Jadzia had been good friends, and Nerys had been very kind to Worf since his wife had died. The Klingon felt a sort of kinship with the Major -- they were both warriors trying to carry on their lives in difficult circumstances...

"No, Major. Thank-you. The encoded message is from Lt. Jonson on the Sutherland, extending her sympathy about my 'recent loss'." He was unable to keep the contempt from his voice, and Kira smiled a grim smile of empathy at his frustration. Poor Worf, she thought, being reminded at every hands turn about Jadzia, when he just wants to be left alone to mourn and do his job....

=/\=

She materialised on the Promenade -- but what a different Promenade! -- and looked around. Smiling, she started to head for the Bar...

Garak was seeing off a Bolian customer who'd just bought a finely tailored waistcoat. Finely tailored by his own hands, even if he said so himself... then he saw a flicker of a transporter beam and a woman appeared. His breath caught in his throat as he realised who it was.... She was supposed to be dead! He flipped the "Out to Lunch" sign on his door and ran to catch up with her...

Jadzia thought she heard someone following her, but when she looked around, no-one was there. She flicked her hair and dismissed it as paranoia. Then she felt a hand clamped around her mouth, a disruptor butt in her back and a pair of arms pulling her into a corridor. Once they were off the Promenade, her assailant let her go, but kept the disruptor pointed firmly at her midsection. She whirled, expecting to see her cruel Klingon lover, but instead saw the Cardassian who had been the Intendant's right hand man.

"You!" she growled, falling into a Mok'bara stance. "You won't get me back there! You'll have to kill me first!"

Garak half-smiled, "My dear Jadzia, whatever are you rambling about?"

Comprehension dawned, "You're not my Garak... in that case, why are you holding me at gun-point?"

The Cardassian smiled ironically, "You never gave me a chance to be your Garak... You were too busy chasing Cmdr. Worf.. But who are you? A Founder?"

"A what?!" she pulled a face.

Garak looked at her, "Where are you from?"

"Trill," she snapped, defensively.

Rolling his eyes, the Cardassian murmured, "Really... I never would have guessed..." Aloud he said, "I don't think you're from around here.."

"I came aboard Terok Nor this morning." She explained.

"Now I know you're not from round here.... Only the Dominion call DS9 Terok Nor any more. I wonder..." he mused, "Garak to Kira, I have something here you and Cmdr. Worf might like to see."

The Intendant and the Regent! In utter horror, Jadzia ignored the weapon pointed at her and began to run. Garak simply fired at her, and she crumpled. "Meet me in the infirmary." He picked up the stunned form of Jadzia Dax and carried her to the Infirmary. Would his friend, the good doctor, ever be surprised!

=/\=

He carried her into the main area, and placed her on a bio-bed,

"Doctor! I have a present for you!" Bashir exited his office and gasped at the woman lying on the bio-bed.

"Jadzia!" he exclaimed, gaping.

"Not quite, Doctor. I believe this woman is the Jadzia Dax from the mirror universe."

Worf and Kira walked in. Worf's eyes immediately fell to the woman on the bio-bed, while Kira tried to demand an explanation, although she was silenced by Worf's heartrending cry.

"Jadzia!" There was so much love, pain, joy and desolation in that one word it was impossible to tell exactly which emotion was dominant. He approached the unconscious woman and placed a hand on her face, touching her with infinite gentleness, lest he break her, or she disappear as she had done in his dreams. Her face was cold; but Trill skin was always cold. Slowly her eyelashes started to flutter, and her eyes slowly opened.

Once the blue eyes found there focus and realised that they were resting on Worf, Jadzia's face was filled with horror and she opened her mouth and screamed. She pulled her body up into a fetal position and cowered.

"I'm sorry Regent..." she whimpered, "I'm sorry; Gods, PLEASE don't hurt me!" She looked at Worf with utter fear in her eyes and she was trembling.

Worf smiled kindly at her, "Jadzia; I am NOT the Regent; and I would never hurt you... I am Cmdr. Worf and you are on Deep Space Nine."

"Then it worked..." she whispered. "How do I know you're not lying to me?"

"Do I look like a terran slave?" Julian, the only human present asked. Jadzia leapt from the bio-bed and kissed him passionately on the lips.

"You may not be my Julian, but at least you're alive!" She told the stunned doctor.

"Well, I… uh…"

Worf's face held an expression that could frighten even a Naussican.

Lifting her hands from around his neck, "I think I better go, uh, get my equipment ready. I want to run a few tests." Looking at Worf, he left the room.

"Kira to Sisko" she touched her com badge.

"Sisko here, what is it Major?" He had given her specific instructions to not have any distractions during his Holosuite time with Jake.

"We have a visitor here, sir. I believe she is an acquaintance of yours" She started to walk towards Jadzia, but she cowered so far to the edge of the bio-bed, she was almost falling off. Kira took a few steps back. She knew all to well how demanding and fearsome the Regent really was.

"Can't it wait Major? It's the bottom of the eighth, and if I remember correctly, the Dodgers get a Grand Slam in the top of the …."

"Ben?" Jadzia looked up. She had missed him dearly since his death.

"Sir, this is very important. I think you should come to the infirmary right away."

"Very well, Major. I'm on my way."

=/\=

"We MUST find her!!" the Intendant screamed. "She has killed two of my guards, and she tried to poison me!" Her personally assembled search team, made up of mostly Cardassian renegades, were slightly taken aback by the volume of her voice. But each of them sought a place by her side, and if they could find and kill Jadzia, they were sure their coveted position was a given. Anything to get rid of the Intendant she now had. He had no respect for Cardassians. He was stretched out on her sofa. "Must we kill her?"

The turned to her team. "Yes we must kill her. Dismissed. And DO NOT return until you have her body!" Her team left the elaborately furnished quarters she called her own. Her attention was now focused on the Klingon on her favorite piece of furniture. She walked toward him, hips swaying, and sat on the ridge beside him. "Why darling, am I not enough to handle for you?" she asked stroking his full eyebrows.

"The Trill is good prey. I capture her, let her loose and she still runs away. When she stops running away, perhaps we can kill her then?"

The Regent pressed her body against his and whispered close into his ear "You are my Regent. You agree to what I say. We are the same kind of ruthless person. I say we kill her because she tried to kill me. We must make an example of her. Unless…" She found the small dagger concealed in her hair and held it to his throat. "..you wish for me to be dead. If that is the case, I can kill you now."

He looked up at her faux appearance of caring towards him and decided to argue with her now would not be in his best interest. "I wish to be by your side, Intendant, for the remainder of my life. You know I do not wish to see you dead."

She put the dagger back in her hair. "Good." she said. She put both hands on the arm of the sofa behind his head. "Are you hungry?" she asked while biting his lip. "I know where we can get some fresh Moba."

He nodded. He wasn't really hungry. He was worried about the Trill. He enjoyed chasing her down and catching her, and doing it all over again, but he did not want to see her dead. She was a strong woman. He secretly hoped as they left the Intendant's quarters, that the Trill had found a way to escape the station.

=/\=

"Old man!" Sisko exclaimed when he saw Jadzia. He was still dressed in his baseball uniform. He took off his cap at the sight of her. Sure her hair was a little short, but it was still Jadzia.

"You know I don't like that Ben". She got up and hugged him.

Worf was impatient too long. "Jadzia," he held his hand out to her while he spoke her name. She clung to Sisko like the holographic dirt on his uniform.

"Worf, Kira, perhaps you two should give us a minute or two. To catch up." He looked at them with a look that said not to argue.

Hours had passed and Worf stayed near the infirmary. He strayed only as far as the replimat for prune juice, but promptly back again. Kira however, found the comfort in her work, and it made for an easy distraction. By now, the word had spread that Jadzia was on the station. Everyone wanted to get a glimpse of the ghost. But none ventured near the infirmary as long as Worf was pacing there.

Finally, Sisko, walked out. He was chuckling.

"Sir, what is so funny?" Worf asked, eager to get inside.

"Oh, Jadzia was just telling me something Smilie had said a few days ago, but that's not important." His visage did a complete turn- around. He was more serious than ever. "I don't want you to see Jadzia until she asks for your company."

"But she is my WIFE!" Worf protested.

"She is not from this timeline Worf. She is not your wife." Sisko turned to look through the open door. Jadzia was smiling as Julian performed his tests. She was talking and laughing. "Worf, in her world, you are not the same man. You chased her and beat her among other things…" Sisko's voice trailed off.

"But she cannot think that of me?! I would never do anything like that to my par'machi." Worf was looking very disturbed. To have his honor tainted by something he could not control was infuriating, but he would give up his honor just to be with her.

"I have set her straight. She trusts me, Worf. I have told her all that happened in this world and that you are a good, honorable man who loved our Jadzia more than life." Sisko crossed his arm behind his back.

"And the doctor?" Worf asked, gritting his teeth.

"Jadzia and the Julian from her timeline are lovers. They were even contemplating marriage." Sisko said it so matter-of-factly, like it didn't matter.

Worf was hurting. He didn't let it show. But he knew he must make her see, he must! But how was he to do that when he was not allowed near her? He would find a way. She was brought back to him, he wasn't going to let her go so easily.

=/\=

"Intendant" the spoon-head gasped for breath.

"You are?" she asked without looking at him.

"My name is Tempec. I know where the Trill is" He caught his breath and now stood proud.

The Intendant got up slowly and looked a him. "So where is she?"

"We tracked her down to the transporter room. She had her path well covered, but she beamed off the station." Tempec was excited.

"And?" aked the Intendant, waving her hands for him to continue.

"She jumped the timeline. And we have the exact co-ordinates. She's in the mirror universe." Tempec smiled

"Ooh, good!" she said while clapping her hands. "Oh, Regent!" She loved being formal. "We're going on a little vacation. Pack light."

"This is Terok Nor," The Regent said, he looked around the Promenade watching the StarFleet people in particular.

"No it's not," replied the Intendant, "It's called *Deep Space Nine* in this universe. You'll have to be careful not to forget that, if you do, I'll have your head, and I do mean literally." The Regent gulped and nodded.

"Do you know where the Trill is?"

"Do I look like an information station? Now, I know that my double lives on the station, but I'm not sure about yours. We can look up the records later, now we've got to find some place to-" Kira was interrupted by another voice.

"Nerys, did you forget we were going to have lunch at Quark's? Oh, hi, Worf!" They saw a short female Trill walking their direction.

"Who's that?" Regent Worf asked.

"I don't know, I didn't see her the last time I was here. Let me do all the talking, if she says anything to you just smile and nod." Kira instructed then she turned to face the Trill woman. "Oh, I guess I did forget, I'm sorry...Lieutenant." The Intendant smiled through her teeth.

"Lieutenant?" the Trill laughed, "All right, Colonel, shall we go?"

"No, I have some business to attend to actually."

"Oh, I guess we could have lunch tomorrow then?" She offered the Intendent.

"Actually, I'd prefer we didn't have lunch at all." The Trill frowned but didn't press matters any further.

"(Worf, would you like to go to the bar for glass of prune juice?)" The Trill asked in Klingonese, the mirror Worf however didn't speak a word of his world's language and just nodded. "(All right then, you aren't on duty are you? No, you wouldn't be wearing that if you were, anyway, let's go.)"

Again Worf nodded, the Trill was starting to get the idea something was strange. "(Would you like me to fry you a Tribble so you can wear it as a hat?)"

The Trill gave them a strange look as Worf nodded. "Oooh, I've got to be going." She said quietly and quickly walked - actually it was closer to a jog - in the other direction.

"You fool!" Hissed Intendant Kira. "She knows that we're not her universe's Kira and Worf!" She slapped Worf across the face and a few people stopped to stare. "We've got to stop her, come on!" Kira pulled the dagger she kept concealed in her hair out and ran after the Trill, Worf obediently followed.

"Catch her!" Kira ordered, Worf quickened his stride and caught up easily. He grabbed the Trill by her shoulder and pulled her around.

"Worf, let go!" She cried and tried to twist out of his grip.

She started to scream but Worf clamped a hand over her mouth and muffled it. Kira caught up to them and let light glisten on the knife so it would catch the Trill's eye.

"Come with us, and be quiet or I will slit your throat!" Threatened Kira, the Trill nodded her blue eyes wide. Worf let go of her shoulder and shoved her forward. "Take us to your quarters!" Ordered Kira and just to show that she meant business she poked the Trill in the small of her back with the handle of the knife.

"Wh-" The Trill started.

"I told you to be quiet!" Kira said grabbing her hand and dragging the knife across the palm of it. The Trill bit her lip to keep in a cry and tried to blink back tears as they entered the habitat ring. She was in too much pain to notice it, but there was a small white mouse following them.

"You know, Julian, I've missed you a lot." Jadzia said as he treated one of her few remaining bruises. Bashir looked up uncomfortably, it was true that he still did have a crush on Dax, but this was weird, not his Dax. He kept reminding himself of that, besides, Worf would kill him in two seconds if he did anything with this Jadzia even though she wasn't his really.

"I've missed you a lot too." That was true in a sense, he hadn't missed anything about the mirror universe Dax included but he had missed his Dax.

"In the mirror we were thinking about getting married." She said for what had to be the billionth time, Bashir had never thought he would get tired of hearing her voice.

"I know, you've told me." Bashir wanted to have this Dax talk to the counselor but since the counselor was also Dax he decided against it. Besides, Ezri hadn't seemed particularly thrilled with meeting her former host.

Then Captain Sisko walked into the infirmary. Both Odo and Major Kira were following him, Dax began to tremble involuntarily and backed away. Bashir put a gentle hand on her shoulder and squeezed. "Don't worry, they won't hurt you, they're good in our universe, remember?" Dax nodded and put on a brave look but somehow Bashir didn't feel convinced by it.

"Doctor, we've got a dilemma." Captain Sisko announced, "Intendant Kira and the Regent have crossed over into our universe."

Dax let out a yelp of distress and jumped off her bio bed. She started to run for the exit but Odo stretched half of his body out to block her escape. Dax stared in shock at Odo and Bashir felt a pang of guilt, he had killed the mirror universe Odo so Dax may have never seen him.

"Perhaps I should sedate her for now." Bashir suggested and moved in with a hypo, Odo began to move back into his human form. When Bashir got near her she grabbed his uniform and pulled him in her for a brief kiss.

"I'm sorry, Love!" She said and punched Bashir, but not before he managed to inject some of the sedative into her. Bashir fell to the floor and Dax ran out the amount of sedative not yet effecting her.

"Doctor, are you all right?!" Cried Captain Sisko, he and the others ran to Bashir's side. The young doctor got up slowly and gently touched the tender spot near his left eye where Dax had punched.

"I can't believe she punched me!" Bashir exclaimed, "I can't believe she bloody punched me!"

Kira bent down and picked up the hypospray Bashir had dropped when he had been punched.

"Did you get any of this into her?" Bashir took the hypo from the colonel.

"Only about half of it, she won't get very far."

"We have to find her!" Sisko said. "Regent Worf and Intendant Kira are out there!"

"Plus they have Ezri." Added Odo, Bashir looked at the Changeling in shock. "They took her hostage on the Promenade, I followed them to her quarters but the Intendant noticed me and attempted to 'exterminate' me. Luckily she thought I was truly only a pest and was happy when I left. They did talk about their plan before I was shooed out though, they want to do an exchange, Dax for Dax."

"And now," Kira said, "We've just lost our last bar of latinum." Everyone looked at Kira oddly, she'd definetly been spending too much time around Quark.

"Keep going! Keep going!" Dax kept muttering to herself, the world around her was blurry and wobbly but she forced herself to keep going. She couldn't give up, now that the Regent and the Intendant were on Deep Space Nine she had to do everything in her power to get away. Dax came to junture in the poorly lit corridors and felt a vent on the wall. She opened it and blindly crawled into the vent, Dax was careful to close it before moving on. "Keep going!" She whispered weakly, the sedative was taking it's toll, she crawled a few more steps and collapsed against the metal wall in the vent. "Keep...going..." She whispered one more time before darkness took her.

"We've got to find her before they do!" Julian shouted as he grabbed his tricorder. "Chief, where are you?"

"Around the corner," came the reply. Bashir poked his head out of the infirmary just in time to see his friend.

"Who do we have to find?" O'Brien demanded.

"Jadzia."

O'Brien nodded, "Let's go."

The two men headed out for the Habitat Ring, instinctively sensing that Jadzia might go there.

"How is the eye doing?" the Chief asked as he and Bashir ran through the corridors of Deep Space Nine.

"Hurts like hell. I didn't know Jadzia had such a mean right hook."

"That's not our Jadzia."

"Don't I know it," Bashir grumbled.

They turned the corner, phasers drawn.

"How much of the sedative did you give her?" O'Brien asked anxiously. "How far do you think she could have gotten?"

"Damned if I know," Bashir answered.

At that moment, Sisko's voice came over the comlink.

"Sisko to O'Brien."

"O'Brien here."

"I need you in Ops, Chief."

O'Brien looked at the doctor apologetically.

"It's all right," Julian said reassuringly. "I'll keep looking for her. She can't have gone far."

"Right."

O'Brien headed off into the opposite direction. Julian pulled out his tricorder. Still no sign of Jadzia.

"Where would you go?" he pondered. "Come on, Jadzia. Where would you go?"

He was lost in his own thoughts when he bumped into Worf.

"Doctor."

"Sorry, Commander. Have you seen Jadzia?"

"Jadzia?"

"I mean, the mirror Jadzia," Bashir stumbled over the words. "She's here. And I think the Intendant and the Regent are here also. And they've got Ezri."

Worf growled, "Where is Ezri now?"

"In her quarters, but we can't find Jadzia. They want to do a swap. Jadzia for Ezri."

"Where is Jadzia?"

"If I knew, I wouldn't be looking for her. Are you going to help or not?" Bashir could tell that Worf was considering his request. In desperation, Bashir grabbed the Klingon's arm.

"Worf! Come on, there's no time! I don't know what the Intendant and the Regent are going to do to Jadzia when they find her, but I don't want to find out."

"Agreed," Worf said decisively. "Let's go."

****

Jadzia lay in the vent, her muscles paralyzed by the sedative Bashir had given her. She cursed herself, angry for reacting so violently to Odo and Kira's presence. She understood now that she had made a mistake. She closed her eyes. She was so tired. Just a few minutes, she thought. I will just sleep for a few minutes.

****

Ezri sat in her quarters, her hands folded neatly over her legs. She watched the Regent and the Intendant nervously.

Ezri had heard of the mirror universe before; and in her previous incarnation as Jadzia, she had even experienced the mirror universe. Unfortunately, a previous host's memory was not quite the same as living through it yourself.

And she also was having quite the time trying to reconcile this vampish ingenue with the Kira she knew and this brutish Klingon with the Worf she still had feelings for.

"Look, it's obvious you guys have some things to work out," Ezri said helpfully.

"Quiet!" the Intendant said, but her smile belied her command and Ezri had a hard time taking this flirtatious Kira seriously.

"We must make Sisko understand we are serious," the Regent growled. "If he does not turn over our Dax, then we must kill his Dax."

"Must we?" the Intendant purred. She rose from her chair and walked over to the Regent, drawing her index finger lightly over his chest. "We will just take this one back with us. It's all the same, isn't it?"

"Actually, if it's all the same to you, I'd rather stay here," Ezri spoke up.

"Quiet!" this time it was the Regent who spoke with considerably more force. "This is a waste of time! Contact Sisko now."

At that moment, there was a door chime.

"Come!" the Regent called out.

The captain of Deep Space Nine walked in. He nodded briefly at Ezri. The Intendant siddled up to Sisko, her hands moving amorously over his shoulders. He shook the Intendant off, not at all disturbed by her proximity.

"I refuse to allow you to turn my station into a zoo," Sisko said. "You will release my officer now."

The Regent growled, whipping out his mek'leth, "Not until you turn Jadzia over to us."

"I do not know where your Jadzia is," Sisko said. "She ran away from our infirmary. We have people looking for her now."

"Until we have her back, we cannot release your crewperson."

Sisko sighed. He looked at Ezri and she offered him a wane smile.

"You will not hurt her?" Sisko asked in a warning tone.

"No, of course not," the Intendant purred.

Sisko shot the mirror universe's Kira a look Ezri could not decipher. Sisko walked over to Ezri and put a comforting hand on her shoulder. He didn't say anything to her, but instead handed her a PADD.

"Your patient records," Sisko said. "I thought you might want to look at them."

Ezri nodded, looking at the PADD curiously. It looked different, not quite what she was used to. It even felt different. And strangely enough, it didn't work. She met Sisko's eyes in quiet understanding. Odo. Suddenly, Ezri felt safe again.

"I have posted guards outside of these quarters," Sisko said.

This news did not please the Intendant and the Regent. Of course Sisko knew there was nothing to prevent those two from jumping back to the mirror universe and taking Ezri with them, but he was gambling on the fact that these two characters desperately wanted to get their hands on Jadzia and would not leave until they had found her. Because of this and because of Odo's presence now, Sisko felt that it would be safe to leave Ezri - at least for the moment.

"I will be back to negotiate," Sisko announced. He nodded at Ezri and stepped outside of the quarters.

Ezri clutched the PADD, wishing desperately she could talk to Odo, but she didn't dare to give it away. She closed her eyes and tried to ignore the Intendant and the Regent arguing.

****

Jadzia opened her eyes. Her head hurt. She pulled herself along the vent, knowing that it would be only a matter of time before she was found. She knew these vents well, having hidden in them many times on her own universe's version of Deep Space Nine. She also knew that the Intendant and the Regent would know these conduits well. She only wondered what was keeping them so long.

****

"We can flood Ezri's quarters with anesthetic gas," O'Brien said to Sisko.

"That should knock the Intendant and the Regent out."

"What about Odo and Ezri?" Kira demanded.

"Them too," O'Brien answered. "But we can beam them out."

"And beam the others directly into the brig," Sisko said thoughtfully.

"It's a good plan. Seal off all the air ducts leading into Ezri's quarters. Make sure the gas doesn't escape into the rest of the station."

"Aye, sir. Sealing the ducts off now."

"When you're ready, Chief."

"Flooding the quarters now."

"Colonel," Sisko nodded. "You're with me."

****

Bashir sighed.

"No sign of her anywhere."

"We will find her," Worf promised. "She can't go far. Not if she has the

amount of sedative in her that you say she does."

"But that means, if they get to her first, she's not going to be able to get away."

"Then we can't give up," Worf said determinedly. "We will find her."

****

The Intendant sniffed the air. She knew the smell of that gas well; several attempts had been made on her life in this manner. Somehow she had known that Sisko would try something like this. She looked over at the Regent, who had suddenly become aware of the slight odor wafting through the air.

"He tricked us!" the Klingon growled.

"This leaves us with only one option," the Intendant said softly. She looked over at Ezri who was clutching at the PADD desperately.

"We leave without Jadzia," the Regent answered.

"Right," the Intendant crossed over to where Ezri was seated. She pulled the young woman to her feet. "Come along, my dear. We're going on a little trip."

"A trip?" Ezri asked, not liking the sound of the Intendant's voice.

"You say you've never been to the mirror universe? Well, let us give you the deluxe tour."

Before Ezri could respond, she felt the familiar tingle of a transporter beam grip her.
