Two days later, Devyn took her algebra test. She did each problem three times to be sure of her accuracy and nearly jumped out of her skin when the teacher called time.  When Devyn walked out of the building, she was so mentally exhausted she didn’t even see Specs waiting for her in the school yard. “Look at dat angel.” Devyn turned and smiled at him. Her heart filled with love as she ran into his waiting arms. “What are you doing here?” “I just thought that after that test you’d like to relax with a picnic in the park.” “That’s so sweet of you, but I have chores to do when I get home.” “Your parents gave you the day off. I went to see them yesterday.” Devyn traced his jawline with her finger. “How did I get so lucky?” He touched her hand. “I was just wondering that myself.”

In their spot, Specs and Devyn ate until they were about to pop. “Dev, there’s one more brownie in the basket, do you mind if I have it?” “Not at all. I’m too stuffed to even look at food.” “Could you get it for me please?” She reached into the basket for the brownie, but instead found a package tied with a bow. A mischievious grin spread across his face. “Surprise.” “Aidan…” “Open it.”

Devyn removed the wrapping, which revealed a framed program from “Carmen”, which was signed by the entire cast. “How did you…” “All I had to do was wait outside the stage door. Piece of cake.” Devyn walked to Specs and crawled into his arms. “Thank you so much. Not just for the program or the picnic, but for loving me so much.” Her kiss stopped his reply.

Over the next two years, Specs left the newsies and started working for the White Sands Hotel, one of the best hotels in the city. He had just been promoted to assistant manager. All he needed to make his life complete was a wife, but he couldn’t bear it if Devyn refused him again.

One night, Devyn called and asked Specs to come over. They kissed in the doorway. “Hey, hon, what did you need?” “Just you.” She took his hand and led him into the dining room. It was lit only by candles and there was a beautiful dinner on the table. “Surprise. I know you’ve been very busy lately at the hotel and I wanted to give you a  treat. Sit down.” “Thanks Dev, it’s beautiful. Where are your parents and Sean and Megan?” “At the theatre. I wanted us to be alone.” Specs took a seat and Devyn started serving him, waiting to see how long it would take him to realize that she was wearing his ring on her left hand. Aidan grabbed her hand suddenly.

“Dev, why are you wearing this?” Devyn saw his the expression on his face change to a mixture of puzzlement and hope and knew it was time for her to tell him what was really in her heart. “Aidan, ask me again. My answer will be different this time, I won’t hurt you again.” “What are you saying?” “I’m ready to be your wife if you still want me.” Aidan scooped her up in his arms. The joy on his face was pure heaven. As Aidan looked at the ring he’d given her so long ago, he smiled because he noticed that it was now a perfect fit.
