There have been many airbrush publications in print since the invention
of the airbrush. In 1891 there was a quarterly newsletter called the Airbrush Journal. It is very rare to find one today but thanks to airbrush historian Andy Penaluna you can read the very first issue now by clicking here! Since 1981 there have been 11 different Airbrush magazines published. The following collection of airbrush publications and information is supplied for historical and educational purposes.

Airbrush World Magazine was released in September 1982. It was published by Michael Maurice in Portland, Oregon. It contained 28 black and white pages with a color cover and back cover. To my knowledge this is the only issue released. It is very rare to find today. The main article was A Dream of Fair Women by George Fox Mott, President of WOLD Air Brush Co. (WOLD went out of business in the early 80's) This article was about Alberto Vargas. Also featured is an interview with Dave Willardson (art on cover)

Airbrush Techniques magazine (not to be confused with the Airbrush Techniques Workbooks published by Northlight Books) was released August 1985 and the second issue in October 1985 then abruptly dissappeared. It was published by William Urban of Portland, Oregon. (He was former editor of Airbrush Digest magazine) It contained 28 pages of mostly black and white but a few color pages. Articles included an interview with Jim Davis of GARFIELD fame and Michael English as well as the usual airbrush maintenance and basic t-shirt how-to's. To my knowledge these were the only two issues released.

Airbrush Digest is the first magazine dedicated to the airbrush industry and was first published in August of 1981. Interestingly enough it is also from Portland, Oregon. Lelon Dietz published 12 issues sporadically during it's four year existence with William Urban as editor. The second issue wasn't released until a year later. The last issue was September/October 1984. Airbrush Digest had filed for bankruptcy in 1982 but continued to publish until it was purchased by Airbrush Action. William Urban tried again with Airbrush Techniques magazine of which two issues were published in 1985.

Airbrush Action magazine still publishes today by Clifford Stieglitz. Airbrush Action acquired much of the assets of Airbrush Digest and in May 1985 Airbrush Action was born and became the "Rolling Stone" of art publications. Published six times a year.
