Disclaimer: Harley Quinn is the awesome invention of Paul Dini and Bruce Timm ( I think), but technically DC Comics owns her. Anyway I am borrowing her, cause she's totally cool. The song excerpts are from the song Insanity off of Boingo's self-titled cd.
My mind has wandered, from the straight and narrow
My mind has wandered from the flock you see
My mind has wandered, the man just said so
My mind has wandered I heard it on TV
She sucked in a breath and looked at his face. At one moment it reminded her of a ghostly apparition exuding cheer and happiness. In the next moment the bloodless mask made her think of a corpse still laughing in its grave. Sometimes she would look at the cracked white skin and imagine filling her hands with hand cream and smoothing it into all the crevices and cracks. The cracks would disappear and the smooth skin would be the pure white of an angel's. At other times she dreamed of biting the strips of skin and tearing them away. She could she herself ripping him to shreds like a rabid animal. A wild hyena. Yes that was appropriate.
I am the Virus, Are you the cure?
I am morally, I am morally impure
I am a disease and I am unclean
I am not part of God's well oiled machine
She cackled and breathed. He was so near. She sucked in the air around her wondering if you could breath in madness like a virus. She could see herself as a germ, an infectious disease. A tiny little fly gasping and wheezing, floundering around on tattered wings. It was insanity and she wondered if was what caused her blue black heart to bleed. She wondered if she was in love with this freak. Her heart squeezed and her knees wobbled when she was with him, but he was a revulsion to her. She had scratches on her arms where she tried to rip off her flesh after taking him in her arms.
My mind has wandered from the flock you see
And the flock has wandered away from me
She pushed in her swollen skin with her index finger. The dull pain shot sharply through her cheek as the pink flesh turned white briefly, and then a deeper shade of red. Tomorrow it would be black and blue. She leaned over and kissed his fuzzy green head, taking a small bite out of his hair, she spit it back onto the pillow rolling the remaining fragments around on her tongue. Sane women live like this all the time so she couldn't be that off the mark. She wondered if she could give herself a hairball. Then she'd be the Catwoman and the Batman would come to save her instead of split her head.
Let's imitate reality
Let's strive for mediocrity
Let's make believe we're all the same
Let's sanitize our little brains
She looked in the mirror. She was black and white and red all over, a walking joke in more ways than one. She turned her head from side to side and watched the white balls bounce off her ears. Her face was white like his, but at night she could wash the pasty face away. Maybe that was her problem. Maybe she needed to let go of those few remaining threads that told her she was mad. Those glimpses she held of that past life when she was a student, a doctor, an amibitious healer? She healed people with laughter. She healed their sorrowful souls sending them off to the next life with a smile on thier face. She couldn't remember why that seemed so wrong just a minute ago.
I'd love to take you home with me and tuck you into bed
I'd love to see what makes you tick inside your pretty head
I'd love to hear you laugh tonight, I'd love to hear you weep
I'd love to listen to you while you're screaming in your sleep
Everyone one was so happy here. She loved to go shopping. The smiling faces, they gasped and giggled. They chortled and choked. Their eyes watered as thier happy faces split. The happy Christmas shoppers rolled on the floor writhing in a blissful sort of agony that forced the air from their lungs and smashed thier brains onto the floor. She hummed as they drummed thier heads on the decorative marble ground. A crystal shower rained down from the sky, filling the air with sparkles as a black cloud of cape and cowl descended towards her. He descended in a cloud of pink gas which fell like quiet onto the mall. The dying shoppers breathed in relief.
Here it comes just like a storm
Bathe in it and be reborn
Time to let the world know
Welcome Madness, say hello...
She wasn't hateful and she wasn't glad. To be here or to be there, he was with her everywhere. They dressed her in gray and placed her in gray. They took away her face and hid him in the room three floors up and two halls away. She talked to the doctors who talked to her reasonably and she talked to the walls who listened to her reasonably. She saw the insanity of it all and saw the insanity of it all. The walls held her in and the walls held her out. Keeping him away from her and her away from them. They kept her away from the insanity and the locked away the insane. But didn't they see that she was exactly where she wanted to be. She was with him and in him madness reigned supreme.
My mind has wandered from the flock you see
And the flock has wandered away from me
