I fell in love with MacGyver as soon as he told the story about trying to ride old man ???'s Palomino horse, then watched him stop an acid leak with a chocolate bar and blow a hole in the wall with a cold capsule (plus a few other ingredients). I watched the show whenever it wasn't pre-empted by football, and told my boss I was sick so I could go home at a reasonable hour to see the very last episode. Mac was such an unlikely hero. One of my favorite quotes of his was when someone else picked up a gun during a fight scene and Mac took it away from him. The other guy complained that it was some special make / model of weapon and Mac responded "yeah, well now it's a wrench".

Below is a picture of my mom and me when we got to meet Richard Dean Anderson backstage after a taping of The Tonight Show. Richard Dean Anderson is a lot like my brother, Michael, in fact when he has facial hair they could almost be twins. They also have similar gestures and phrases. We told Richard about the likeness when we met him, and he walked right up to my mother and gave her a big hug and called her mom. She wasn't even the fan, but she was speechless. I think she even watches MacGyver re-runs now (although I'm sure she would say she got a satelite dish for the sports, I'll bet it was to get WGN).

If you get WGN out of Chicago, you can still watch MacGyver re-runs, although they have been cut up a lot, it's heartning to know there is still an audience for a show about a gentle hero that doesn't like guns, and can make or fix almost anything out of or with almost nothing.
