Here's a very simple way to help yourself focus on the immediate situation, rather than letting anxiety run away with you.
Close your eyes and take a consciously deep breath. Open your eyes and look at each of the eight corners of the room you are in, taking another deep breath for each corner you look at.
Really look at each corner - are there cobwebs? Is the carpet a different color against the wall than out in the middle? Are the walls straight and square? Do you like the color of the paint?
The purpose of this exercise is to interrupt the internal dialog and the attendant feelings that drive internal dialog, and replace all that with a sense of low-key interest in where you are.
On another level, this exercise is a straight-forward step into the immediate here and now of your existance.
