Who is Mani ?

Hi! My name is SIVASUBRAMANIAN....and if saying that out loud is getting your tongue tangled up with your tonsils, try doing what people who know me well do...call me MANI....that rhymes with MONEY, and almost everyone loves us both !

I was a real cute looker in those days ! Take a peek at my picture then...

As a kid, I've been a globe-trotter....I was born in Madras, India on the 1st of May, 1967....and that's the REAL reason the world celebrates May Day !I started my travels at the tender age of ten....MONTHS, that is, not years. First stop, Sydney, Australia...where I celebrated my first birthday. Next, Dunedin, New Zealand...where I spent an idyllic two years in Mom's lap, and on Lassie's (our neighbour's pet doggie) back. When Neil Armstrong made his "Giant Leap for Mankind", Mani made his giant leap...across the ocean to Houston, Texas....I was all of two years old then. The halcyon days of kindergarden at Hou remain fresh in my mind still....as do the memories of my first friend, Rita
Rita, if you read this, get in touch right away, sweetheart....You still owe me some Hershey's Kisses !

At last, Dad's Fellowship in Cardiology at the Texas Heart Institute was over, and it was time to go back home....but en route, 'lil Mani took in Disney World, 'big' New York, London and Frankfurt.

Finally, at the grand old age of five, I returned to Madras....wiser and travel-weary !

Here's Where I'm At NOW !

School was unremarkable...Medical College an eye-opener.....Graduate Training in Surgery a back-breaker...and at last...."The Promised Land" !

I live in the beautiful coastal city of Madras in the southern part of India.....a sprawling 87 square mile metropolis with a population of over 5.3 million. In addition to boasting of the SECOND LONGEST BEACH in the world...The Marina Beach...the city can truly be called the HEART SURGERY CAPITAL OF INDIA....
Sometimes, it almost seems that its impossible to throw a stone in Madras without hitting a heart surgeon!
That's perhaps one of the reasons I was lured towards this thrilling specialty.

Be that as it may, for just more than two years now, I have been where I have always dreamt of being....in the cardiac surgery operating suite, and enjoying every moment of it.
In the words of Don Vito Corleone - THE GODFATHER -
"Every man has but one destiny"
...and I hope it is mine to become a great heart surgeon !

...So Where Do I Go From Here ?

" Ah...but a man's reach should exceed his grasp, or what's heaven for ? "

I am at the cross-roads, awaiting guidance - divine or otherwise - on which way to go...

I love kids, and hate seeing them suffer from disease. A lifetime devoted to treating heart disease in children, personally, seems exciting and satisfying.....Also, birth defects of the heart are very complex, and their surgical correction is extremely challenging.

There are a few hurdles...daunting, though not insurmountable. In India, not many centers have training programs in this sub-specialty, and so I will probably have to re-trace my path around the globe to train in pediatric cardiac surgery. I hope and pray that I will get such an opportunity soon !
