Preface

In cancer therapy , there are two models of concept:

1) Conventional strategies of treatment based upon the notion that cancer is primarily a local course of disease. The therapy aims at a local removal of the tumor tissue.

2) From the angle of biological medicine, carcinosis is a disease process affecting the entire individual. The tumor is a symptom of the disturbance. The biological therapy aims at treating the whole organism.

In the first case , the chosen therapy includes surgery , radiation and cytostatic agents. In the second case we try to activate the body's specific defense systems against the degenerate cells.

The theory of biologically oriented physicians proceeds on the assumption that the body's immunological system continuously recognizes and removes newly developing cancer cells. On the basis of this theory , we understand how important it is to strengthen the body's immunological system. From among the variety of biological forms of therapy, the therapy with the full extract of Viscum Album (Mistletoe) has crystallized more and more during the last few decades. The mistletoe therapy was recommended by Rudolf Steiner and introduced into cancer therapy by Ita Wegmann. From among the various mistletoe preparations offered , Vysorel (Isorel) has the advantage of being suitable for intravenous infusions. Such an infusion therapy, if properly applied , causes speedy subjective improvement of the quality of life and objectively measurable improvement of all laboratory values in patients with prognostically unfavourable initial condition , after having undergone traditional treatment.

Casuistics

In Aug 1984, cerebral metastases with severe neurologic deficiency symptoms were detected in a 48 year old housewife , U.U , at the Medizinische Hochschule Hanover via CT scan. In April 1983, hysterectomy and adnexectomy had preceded because of metastasising leiomyosarcoma in the uterus. In order to relieve the neurological symptoms, the patient received a palliative series of radiation of the skull.

In Oct 1984 , the patient appeared in my practice with cerebral metastases. Further findings made by me revealed an anxious, depressive patient in a poor general condition. Lab values : BSR 70/125, thrombocytes 70,000, erythrocytes 3.63, leucocytes 4,600, GOT 10.6, GT 12.4, gamma GT 15, LDH 180, AP 80.

On account of severe symptoms and of the infaust prognosis, an infusion therapy with VYSOREL M (ISOREL M) strength 60 was scheduled. The initial dose was 10 ampoules in 250 ml of normal saline 3 times a week , each time increasing by 2 ampoules upto 20 ampoules per infusion bottle. Then the dose was decreased by 2 ampoule each time until the dose reached 10 ampoules per infusion bottle.

Parallel to the therapy, change over to lacto-vegitarian diet and application of homeopathic remedies to purify the system such as Hepheel, Solidage, Symbioflor and Lymphomyosot. At the beginning , the patients's mental sensitivity was very bad , her depression increased so that Imap 1.5 mg had to be injected in the first 2 weeks. In the third week, Imap could be discontinued. The patient's subjective condition improved every week.

On Dec 5 1984, lab values were: BSR 30/65, thrombocytes 88,000 , erythro 4.50 , leuco 6,200 , liver values still in normal range.

On Jan 23,1985 , another CT scan was done at Medizinische Hochschule Hanover. The cerebral matter was without pathologic findings. The evident metastasis in the high frontal section on the right and the uncertain metastasis in the high frontal section on the left could no longer be detected. The ventricular system was in central position and of normal width. Compared with the preliminary examination, the outer subarachnoid space was open at that time.

Laboratory findings on Jan 21, 1985 : BSR 33/77. All other laboratory values in normal range.
Laboratory findings on Mar 14, 1985 : BSR 10/26. All other laboratory values still in normal range.

Assessment

Cranial CT scan without pathological findings , no metastasis detectable. Whole body scanning on Jan 10,1985 without pathological findings.

After 2 1/2 months of continuous infusion therapy with Vysorel , total remission could be achieved. No side effects were observed.

Therapy was continued with subcutaneous application of daily dose of 1 amp. VYSOREL strength 60 for 3 weeks , then 7 days without treatment and after that resumption of infusion therapy in six months intervals for one month according to the above scheme.

On the strength of the above case and of the research findings concerning Viscum Album - pharmaceutically Vysorel (Isorel) , with its cancerostatic and immunostimulating properties thus seems to offer itself in manifest carcinomas , in prognostically infaust cases and in the prophylaxis of recidivity and metastases as a highly efficient therapeutic agent.
