Se eu tivesse o dom de falar em outras línguas
sem tê-las aprendido, e se pudesse falar em qualquer idioma que há
em toda a terra e no céu e no entanto não amasse os outros,
eu estaria só fazendo barulho. 2
Se eu tivesse o dom de profetizar, e conhecesse tudo
sobre o que vai acontecer no futuro, soubesse tudo sobre todas as coisas,
e contudo não amasse os outros, que bem faria isso? Mesmo que eu
tivesse o dom da fé, a ponto de poder falar a uma montanha e fazê-la
sair do lugar, ainda assim eu não valeria absolutamente nada sem
amor. 3 Se
eu desse aos pobres tudo quanto tenho e fosse queimado vivo por pregar
o Evangelho, e contudo não amasse os outros, isso não teria
valor algum.

IF I HAD the gift of being able to speak in other languages whithout learning
the, and could speak in every language there is in all of heaven and earth,
but didn't love others, I would only be making noise. 2 If had the gift
of prophecy and knew all about what is going to happen in the future, knew
everything about everything, but didn't love others, what good would it
do? Even if I had the gift of faith so that I could speak to a mountain
and make it move, I would still be worth nothing at all without love. 3
If I gave everyting I have to poor people, and if I were burned alive for
preaching the Gospel but didn't love others, it would be of no value whatever.

4 O amor é
muito paciente e bondoso, nunca é invejoso ou ciumento, 5
nunca é presunçoso nem orgulhoso,
nunca é arrogante, nem egoísta, nem tampouco rude. O amor
não exige que se faça o que ele quer. Não é
irritadiço, nem melindroso. Não guarda rancor e dificilmente
notará o mal que os outros lhe fazem. 6
Nunca está satisfeito com a injustiça,
mas se alegra quando a verdade triunfa. 7
Se você amar alguém, será leal
para com ele, custe o que custar. Sempre acreditará nele, sempre
se manterá em sua defesa.

Love is very patient and kind, never jealous or envious, never boastful
or proud,5 never haughty or selfish or rude. Love does not demand its own
way. It is not irritable or touchy. It does not hold grudges and will hardly
even notice when others do it wrong.6 It is never glad about injustice,
but rejoices whenever truth wins out 7 If you love someone you will be
loyal to him no matter what the cost. You will always believe in him, always
expect the best of him, and always stand your ground in defending him.

8 Todos os dons e
poderes especiais que vêm de Deus terminarão um dia, porém
o amor continuará para sempre. Algum dia a profecia, o falar em
línguas desconhecidas e a sabedoria especial - os dons desaparecerão. 9
Porquanto agora sabemos muito pouco, mesmo com
nossos dons especiais; e a pregação dos mais dotados é
ainda muito imperfeita. 10
Entretanto, quando tivermos sido feitos completos
e aperfeiçoados, então cessará a necessidade desses
dons especiais e insuficientes, e eles desaparecerão.

All the special gifts and powers from God will someday come to an end,
but love goes on forever. Someday prophecy, and speaking in unknown languagens,
and special knowledge–these gifts will disappear.9 Now we know so little,
even with our special gifts, and the preaching of those most gifted is
still so poor.10 But when we have been made perfect and complete, then
the need for these inadequate special gifts will come to an end, and they
will disappear.

11 É como
neste caso: Quando eu era criança, falava e raciocinava como criança.
Mas quando me tornei homem, meus pensamentos se desenvolveram muito além
dos pensamentos da minha infância, e agora eu deixei as coisas de
criança. 12 De
igual modo, agora só podemos ver e compreender um pouquinho a respeito
de Deus, como se estivéssemos observando Seu reflexo num espelho
muito ruim; mas o dia chegará quando O veremos integralmente, face
a face. Tudo quanto sei agora é obscuro e confuso, mas depois verei
tudo com clareza, tão claramente como Deus está vendo agora
mesmo no interior do meu coração.

It's like this: when I was a child I spoke and thought and reasoned as
a a child does. But when I became a man my thoughts grew far beyond those
of my childhood, and now I have put away the childish things.12 In the
same way, we can see and understand only a little about God now, as if
we were peering at his reflection in a poor mirror; but someday we are
going to see him in his completeness, face to face. Now all that I know
is hazy and blurred, but then I will see everything clearly, just as clearly
as God sees into my heart right now.

coisas que perduram - a fé, a esperança e o amor - e a maior
destas é o amor.
