MiG-29
This unique picture shows a MiG-29 (Foreground)
formating with an armed Mirage-2000. This is an interesting combination
of aircraft and missiles - the pair above are carrying between them
four BVR and four close combat missiles. There are many such photographs
of dissimilar Indian Air Force aircraft flying together - suggesting that
this is a common practice, and that each aircraft covers up for any weak
points in the other, while supplementing their respective strengths. The
MiG-29 is carrying two R-27 medium range AAMs, and two R-73
short range AAMs. Click here to see a description
of the missile armament of the Mirage-2000
The picture on the right shows the little hole in
the port (left) wing root of a MiG-29 which indicates the location of the
GSh-301 30mm gun with 460 rounds. Gun aiming and accuracy is assisted
by a laser rangefinder.
This super image of two IAF MiG-29s shows them carrying
missiles that I cannot recognise. If someone knows what they are, please
email me.
NOTE: After I put up the above message
I have received several emails telling me what they are. Peter Grining
from Australia wrote: "The picture of the 2 MiG-29s with the missiles you
can not identify are R-60 acquisition rounds. That is they can not
be fired, but they are used for training."
Jose Yacazzi from Argentina wrote
"the misiles that you cannot recognize are training versions of the AA-8
aphid & AA-11 Archer"
Looks like the Southern hemisphere
beats the Northern Hemisphere hands down in this business :-)
