The College Years
Now, if most of your read the high school section of my chronicles, you will have learned
that my future dreams were dashed in a moment by an inhaler...well, so to speak. See, like
I stated before, the army was peacetime, and therefore, people with asthma, really were not
being accepting into Uncle Sam's forces. Therefore, I headed back to Pennsylvania, to look
for some new dreams, and figure out just what I was going to do with my life.
Well, I figured, I should do what just about 70% of my graduating class did, and go to college.
I decided to go to Pennsylvania College of Technology, in Williamsport, PA, and major in Mass
Communications with and emphasis in Public Relations and Journalism. Only problem was, I had
to wait a sememster to start my classes, because it was already the end of June till I even began
the paperwork of addmission, and the mounds of forms for finicial aid.
I needed major amounts of money to attend the college, because my parents were one of those
typical middle imcome americans that made to much money to qualify for any kind of grants, and
too little to afford to send me to college on their own. So Story found not one, nope.. not
two... but three jobs. I maintained my job with Docktor Pet Centers (for whom I had worked for all
through high school), then when September rolled around I got another job in a mug stand that
put pictures on mugs. Finally, when christmas time rolled around, I was one of Santa's helpers,
and no.... I did not wear one of those ELF outfits (*LOL*). Sometimes it is all a blur to me, mainly
because I was so busy at that time, I didn't know which way my head was spinning.
Luckily, I managed to save enough money for my rent, my books and for food allowance at the school
cafeteria. That helped out a lot, because I didn't qualify for many scholarships at the time, because
of my late entry into the undergraduate consortium. So with money in hand, an eageriness to learn in
my heart, I set off for The Pennsylvania College of Techonolgy, in Williamsport, PA.
My first semester, I lived in a house about a block from the college. There were other gals there tha lived in the
house too. Three of us from the house managed to survive even sharing an apartment together, the next year, after the
house we lived in was sold. Pat, Ericka and I caused some holy hell in our aparment building from time to time, everything
from mud sliding and table surfing, to my Mostecelli dinners that managed to bring out the whole floor to our apartment. *lol*
My two best friends also went to the college, Angie and Angie... and yes sometimes that did happen to get confusing. My last sememster
of school I was roomies with my friend Dawn, whom I had some wild time with too, I had the wheels (an '81 mustang), and she just
happened to be 21. *G* All in all academically and fun times included, I have to admit, those are the times I don't think I will ever forget.
I was involved in some activities and school, other than partying. (Believe that!) One of which I was a radio disc jockey for the
two years I was there at the college. "WWAS 88.1, the radio voice of Penn College". Where on certain days you could here the voice of
Emma Eckman, spinning the tunes for two hours. And no, the tunes weren't country tunes either, but it was where I
began my love of country music. I heard Travis Tritt's "Country Club", and I was hooked. There was no turning back from there!
Finally in December of 1991, I graduated, with an Associates Degree in Mass Communications. I had started to send out resumes at the beginning of
my last semester, but to no avail, I could not find a job. So, I headed back home to wait out finding a job.
And just so you all know, I'm the younger one of the right. *G*
