The Tea Tree Gully Angling Club fielded only one Men's team which consisted of Ian Heath, Justin Shaw (a junior), David Wilkins, Graham Hooper, Mark Minahan (1st freshwater trip) and Brad Heath. On Saturday 22nd November, Myself (Brad) and David went up to research the venue for the Sunday competition. We fished a spot on the northern shoreline of Lake Bonney which has produced well in lead up and exploratory trips.
On the Saturday the fish were slower than usual but we thought that with an average size of 2kg it would be good for the Sunday comp. The "no-pre-berley" rule also had us thinking that if we caught the fish without berley they should come on with berley on the Sunday. Mark and Graham arrived at the Cobdogla Station Caravan Park on Saturday night so the four of us sat around and discussed tactics for the following days competition.
On the Sunday morning Ian and Justin arrived all ready to do battle with the so named mud guzzling "Swamp Trout" or European Carp. All of our team decided to fish the general area at Lake Bonney where David and I had found the fish. Well the fishing got off to a very slow start despite heavy berleying. After 3 hours the wind died down and no one had had a bite let alone a fish. The Lake calmed off and plenty of 3-8kg carp could be seen lazing around on the surface in a non feeding mood. Despite the heavy berleying we could not get their heads down and feeding. The average fish was small in front of me where David had slightly larger average sized fish where he was.
OUR FINAL CLUB RANKINGS WERE
David Wilkins- 12 fish for 28.775kg
Brad Heath- 17 fish for 24.95kg
Graham Hooper- 8 fish for 12.45kg
Justin Shaw- 7 fish for 9.1kg
Ian Heath- 7 fish for 7.125kg
Mark Minahan- 1 fish for 1.425kg
