SQUID

Sepioteuthis australis

The Southern Calamari variety of Squid is very common around the Southern half of Australia and is commercially fished in these regions. The Southern Calamari's flaps run the full length of the body unlike the Aero Squids small triangular shaped fins at the top of its body. The body is basically a cylindrical cone shape with the head coming off the blunt end. They are a good eating fish and an excellent baitfish for many species.

HABITAT

The Southern Calamari is commonly found in the shallow weedbanks that are so common in bays, estuaries and calm coastal environments. They will be found around reef or rock areas occasionally and sometimes they will also be found around sand but their favourite environment is the weedbanks that consist primarily of ribbon weed. The sandy areas may work well of a night time.

FISHING

Squid are not a particularly difficult animal to catch. They can occasionally prove fickle but this is much like any other fish that you will chase. All you need to get started is a squid jig of either Yo-zuri type or a wire stemmed one. The Yo-zuri can just be drifted around weedbeds or cast and retrieved while the wire stem with a baitfish on it is best suspended below a float about 1 metre off the bottom over the weed. The only other thing that helps is heavy (20-30lb) line so that if the jag gets caught in the weed, you can get it back without losing it.
