NoSoy Product of the Month
July 99
Somebody is paying attention! Kellogs now prints a soy contamination notice on Chocolate Frosted Flakes. Hope to see more of this. Will be making the forum public because I can't keep up with requests to join. Sorry for HMTL features that don't work, the transition to Yahoo from Geocities had really bollixed a lot of things that used to work.
Be sure to print out Soy Aliases for useful discussions with school and hospital dietitians.

Unless you know another, the last mayo, Hain Safflower, has gone. Hain is adding
Vitamin E, made from soy. If enough of us write
and call maybe they will take the soy out. And tell your
friends who like organic food that soy is genetically engineered and, hence, not organic. Get them to call
Hain, too!
Here is their address and tele:

Help put a stop to this additive maddness!
This has been a bad year for us: Land O'Lakes unsalted butter started adding natural flavors (MSG), can't find a
breakfast sausage without MSG or soy protein, even the new
Keri Moisturizer has soy. We have to get organized and get
the word out or we'll be really cooking everything from
scratch and unable to find any cosmetics (so we'll be the
worst looking group, too).
ORGANIC VALLEY UNSALTED BUTTER
(from inside the carton)"Organic Valley
is the brand name for the organic products grown by the members of the CROPP Cooperative located in LaFarge, Wisconsin....We do not use cheese or butter enzymes that have been biogenetically engineered or rennet derived from animal sources. No colorings, MSG, flavor enhancers or flowing agents are used." Hip, hip,
hurray.

Finally set up the NoSoy Forum. Decided to make it private to slow spam and nasty comments.
You can join the forum by checking the forum box on the
guestbook page or going to the Forum Welcome Page. We have a chat room, too. Check back for
scheduled chats.

Coming soon - DISCUSSION page (because adding comments
takes too long) so you can "talk among yourselves" as they
say. I'll take out the death threat posting, so don't
bother if you're a nitwit. Yes, we've gotten some junk.
Look out, just got a sample newsletter from the Food Allergy Network that claimed soy oil is safe. What a load! Volma went
into anaphalatic shock after eating a steak fried in soy oil
and almost died (the doctor said she would but after
heroic measures they were able to save her). How soy allergy
works is still not known. It is not just the protein as
the Food Allergy Network claims. We wondered why people
were asking is soy oil safe (no, no, no) or why they
were going to MacDonald's (they use soy oil) and then complained
about reactions. Now we know. And so do you. Don't
eat soy oil, or vegetable oil (a combination of oils).
Urgent! Several people have requested the name of a
baby formula that does not contain soy. If you know of
one, please send it pronto. In the meantime, Volma recommends
Eagle Brand Condensed Milk. What ever they do to it seems
to give less or no reaction than regular evaporated milk.

- Rapunzel Organic Swiss Chocolate.
MORE CHOCOLATE, CANDY THIS TIME. We have this report from Margaret Alia
Denney of the NoSoy Patrol:
"I found that chocolate that my hubby can eat. (Baking chocolate-Baker's
Chocolate- is nothing but chocolate, but I somehow doubt that's what
you're looking for.) The company that makes chocolate without lecithin
and glycerides is Rapunzel, and I found it at a health food store. The
dark chocolate tastes like most dark chocolate, and the milk chocolate
is incredibly smooth and creamy. It takes a bit of adjusting to. A friend
of mine tasted it, and said it tastes like the chocolate he got in Germany.
Since it's organic, the best place to find it would be health food stores.
Mercantile is an organic food distributor, so health food stores and the
like will know the distributor even if they don't carry that product."

- Thanks and kudo's to Margaret Alia Denney.

- OK, time for HAIN. There are at least three and maybe
more products without soy made by this marvelous manufacturer. But you
need to call them at 1-800-434-HAIN (EST) to get them to compile a list
of all their products without soy. We called and they said they would add
it to their "todo" list but if more call it will get done sooner!
And don't forget to ask for a discount coupon (they don't have them but
again, if enough people ask they will start. Tell them the other manufactures
send them out when you called.)
- HAIN SAFFLOWER MAYONNAISE
- It tastes great! Just like Best Foods before they
messed theirs up. Your non-allergic family won't be able to tell the difference.
If you have tried making your own funny tasting mayonnaise which spoiled
before you could even eat it all, you will realize this is a godsend. Be
wary of other manufacturer's safflower mayonnaise because most of them
contain soy (so why do they call it safflower mayonnaise? To rip off Hain?).
Smith's grocery chain had the nerve to put the imposter next to the HAIN
products as a substitute. LOOK OUT! By the way, mayonnaise is a great hair
conditioner. Put it on, wrap your head in plastic, cover with a towel for
20 minutes, then shampoo out. You'll look like Lady Godiva (or Lord Godiva
as the case may be) with shiny locks.
- HAIN SALTINE CRACKERS
- When was the last time you had a saltine? It's so
great to be able to eat cheese and crackers again (with a little wine).
They're not too salty. They are FAT FREE and made with Organic Wheat Flour.
We've been going nuts, crackers and soup, crackers and sardines (in olive
oil, of course), crackers and peanut butter. We can't get enough. HAIN
makes other crackers but our store only had the saltines. We'll call HAIN
again and ask about the other crackers and snacks. You call too.
- HAIN CHOCOLATE GRAHAMS
- YES, CHOCOLATE! We had given up on graham crackers
several years ago. So were we suprised to see these. Yummy. They have no
saturated fat, and no cholesterol (as if you care since they have chocolate).
They're made with wholesome ingredients like honey, real graham flour,
molasses and cocoa. So now, you can have a graham cracker crust for your
cheese cake (don't know about the HAIN margerine so unless you call to
check, use butter). Again, they make other graham products but you'll have
to call to check for soy.
- Find HAIN in health food stores and some regular stores.

YOPLAIT ORIGINAL FAT FREE PLAIN YOGURT and YOPLAIT
EXTRA CREAMY PLAIN YOGURT
- We buy the Plain Yogurt 2 lb. package because it can
be made into whatever you want. For example, sugar, vanilla and canned
peaches (use a little of the juice too) and you have the most wonderful
tasting peach yogurt you can imagine. We also like the extra creamy mixed
with garlic powder on baked potatoes (less fat calories than sour cream
and less expensive too).

For $2 worth of coupons good for any General Mills
Food Product, call the 800 number below and ask for a list of their soy
free products. By the way, by calling or writing, you let them know there
is a public out there concerned about ingredients and labeling. I don't
know if they'll send coupons if you email but you can try email.
- The letter they sent me covered HVP (the ubiquitous
"hydrolyzed vegetable protein") and MSG (monsodium glutamate)
which they say come from a number of plant sources, including wheat, soy, corn
and rice. They won't get any more specific than that unless they hear from
us.
- They do say that they list in the ingredients everything
that has HVP or MSG added. They didn't say what natural flavors are, however.
They also sent 6 pages of products without MSG but said the list couldn't
be published. More work for them, eh? I guess they also want to be free
to change the ingredients whenever they want.
- Don't you just love it when the ingredients change
on something you've been buying for years? You pick it up without reading
the label and get sick. One thing we've learned the hard way is that if
something you regularly buy, like bread, stops appearing on the shelf,
the ingredients are propbably different when it reappears. So, beware.

How
to get free discounts on most foods.
I know you read the labels, but have you paid attention
to the 800 numbers on products? That's the secret number, the open sesame,
to discount coupons free.
Here's what you do: You call that bad 800 number and
ask either if a specific food contains soy, msg, or mono-diglycerides,
or whether the manufaturer makes any food without thoses three items.
Voila, in almost all cases they'll send you some free
coupons along with a list of soy free products. The worse case scenarios
are either they don't make anything without soy or that their list is not
all soy inclusive (they send you a list of things without MSG but not a
list of things without soy).
Usually they send undated manufacturer's coupons, good
for any product by the manufacturer. So, even in the worst case, you may
get something for your dog (although our dogs don't like soy either, oddly
enough, they prefer corn based dog food if it's not meat).
DEEP SEA Chunk Light Tongol TUNA in artesian water
- You'll wonder what they do to the other tuna after
you taste this. This tuna has large pieces of firm white meat in water
with NO ADDITIVES, NO PRSERVATIVES and NO ARTIFICAL FLAVORS. Unlike the
other brands that have little flakes of dark left over tuna in (hydrolized
vegetable protein) soy broth that looks and tastes worse than cat food.
- You can buy it with or without salt. They have the
"No Threat to the Dolphin Species" label.
- They used to have tuna in virgin olive oil (to die
for) but said there was no public demand. So write or call the distributor,
Stowmills (603)256-3000x2260 or the importer, Santini Foods (510)317-8888,
and let them know you would like the tuna in oil. If enough of us call
they will start making it again.
- Look for it at your health food store or food distributor:

Liberty Orchards Fruit Candies at their
home page
- These great candies without soy are recreations of
Rahat Locum or Turkish Delight from an Armenian recipe. The flavors, ah,
what can I say? I discovered Aplets and Cotlets (Apple and Apricot with
walnuts) in San Francisco on the bay, so I always think of happy times
with sun on the waves when I eat them.
But they have more than apple and apricot, they have rose,
boysenberry, orange, cinnamon, and a wealth of others. You're sure to find
your favorite.
And they have SUGAR FREE! And WITH or WITHOUT nuts. They
have other nuts, too,Pistachio, Almond and Macadamia. Oh, yum, yum, yum.
The only thing you can't eat from them are the chocolate
dipped candies. P.S. Great Web site with virtual store. Be sure to visit.

Kern's Nectar
- Yes, the bean got to fruit juice. But here's an assortment
of luscious nectars, Apricot, Guava, Peach and Strawberry that are soy
free. They are relatively expensive by the can (67 to 75 cents on the shelf)
but we get them by the case (24 11.5 ounce cans) at the Price Club where
they are cheaper. You might check a local soft drink distributor (in the
yellow pages under Bevarages, Soft Drinks or even liquor) if you want to
purchase a case at a lower price. Unfortunately, you can't order them direct
from Nesle Beverage Company but they may tell you how to contact your local
distributor. They are sending a product list so we can see if they have
any other soy free foods but since they are a major soybean producer, it
doesn't bode well.

Hell on the Red Hot Mustard
- Trouble finding a mustard without "natural flavors"?
Here's a good one (like French's only better) and it's really not hot (more
on the mild side). Once we tasted it we saved the jar, but we couldn't
find it again. The company also produces other products (to be mentioned
later when they get the list to me). Hell on the Red referrs to their location,
on the Red River. If you want to drop by, you can search for their map
at WhoWhere Yellow
Pages.
Good
news! They are willing to give a discount! Just tell them you found them
at NoSoy. If you don't think you'll eat a case of mustard in this lifetime,
ask them to make an assorted box of products with no soy (barbecue sauce
and picante sauce - maybe more).

Bradley Beef (B3R Country Meats)
- About ten years ago we noticed that hamburger from
the store was causing allergic reactions (blisters on the butt). Part of
the problem was store owners adulterating the the meat with cheap soy additives
(against the law) to get more money. The problem accelerated over the years
as soy became the feed of choice.
There is a process called finishing, where some cattle
owners will force feed soy and give injections to put extra weight (mostly
water) on the cow just before selling it. This soy comes right through
the cow to you in the meat.
- Two solutions:
- 1) Buy a range or grass fed cow
and have it butchered yourself.
- We've done this 'cause we live in cow country. If
you live in New Mexico, Matthews Meats, at (505)864-7314 in Belen, can
arrange the buying and butchering. You can have it prepared as you wish
(different cuts, smoked, etc.) and it comes neatly labeled and wrapped.
You have to pick it up, but it's solidly frozen
for you to take it home. I don't know if they can send it because they're
right around the corner. The last cow is delectably tender and flavorful.
- 2) Order your beef directly from
a reliable souce such as Bradley's Beef.
- I found their product in the Co-op in Albuquerque
(maybe, your local store or health food store can order it if you ask).
Mary Lou Bradley is the owner and produces "well marbled beef that
has very little external fat" and rich in flavor. They are inspected
by the USDA and have USDA Verified labeling. This means they can ship anywhere!
The cattle is hand-picked for youth, quality and tenderness at the Bradley
3 Ranch. B3R is the brand on the cattle. This is good Angus meat! No discount
when I talked to them, but you can ask. Don't forget to tell Bradley how
you found out about them.
