Merpati Putih student has to go through various different levels to achieve mastery of the stated skills. Upon joining MP, a student is considered to be in "Dasar I" or "Basic I" level. Then he or she will have to move up the ranks to attain better and better skills and techniques.

Examination is performed every 6 months. And the examination comprises of 3 phases. The first phase is the Movement/Fighting Technique Examination. In this phase, the student is being tested on his ability to perform the various movement/techniques of his present rank. Then the next is the Physical & Stamina Test, where the student is required to jog for approximately 15 km barefooted. And the last is the Power Test, it is in this test that the students hard work is being tested. Depending on the rank, the student might be required to break a cement block or several layers of the same block. Sometimes metal bars are used to substitute cement blocks, as cement is an expensive commodity these days. Upon passing the 3 phases, the student is yet faced with several tests, which we will not attempt to discuss further in details.

The higher the rank, the harder and longer it takes to get promoted. In general, Dasar I to Balik II tests are performed every 6 months. But as the student attain the rank of Kombinasi I, his examination will be performed approximately once a year. As one is about to move up from Kombinasi II to Khusus I, the examination is performed in Yogyakarta, Central Java where the MP Head quarter is located and only upon the invitation of the Grand Council of Merpati Putih. It is in the Khusus level that the student begins to take mastery in one of the 5 skills explained earlier. The student will have been exposed to all the 5 skill upon reaching Khusus I, and has most probably selected a skill that is most appropriate to his talents and interest. The meaning of "khusus" itself is "specialist", meaning the student will have already made up his mind to specialize on 1 of the 5 skills. The next level is the "Kesegaran" or "Refresher", then "Inti" level or the "Core", the highest level that an MP practitioner can achieve. This level is only given to a selected few, usually only to people who's loyalty has been proven towards the school.
