This program is designed for internists, cardiologists and emergency medicine practitioners and will assist in a better understanding and practice of Cardiology.

The program will concentrate on presenting the NEWER DIAGNOSTIC AND THERAPEUTIC TECHNIQUES used in clinical and invasive cardiology.

The program will focus on the newer techniques for managing acute myocardial infarctions, risk assessment and management, prevention and treatment of valvular and coronary artery disease, all aspects of interventional cardiology, treatment of congestive heart failure, (pharmacologic and surgical) treatment of arrhythmias including the use of pacemakers.

Specific objectives of the course:

On the completion of this program attendees should be competent in the following fields:

A practical strategy for the management of acute myocardial ischaemia and infarction.
The place of thrombolytic therapy angioplasty and other new techniques.
Develop an understanding of the management of patients with atrial arrhythmias, particularly atrial fibrillation.
Be able to discuss the current role for use of stents in coronary artery disease.
Discuss the principles of treatment of cardiomyopathy including the use of cardiac pacing.
Review clinical trials of betablockers, calcium antagonists and other drugs in he treatment of coronary artery disease.
Review selected aspects of peripherals vascular disease.
Develop an understanding of the use of antocoagulants, antiplatelet agents and antithrombin agents in patients with coronary artery disease and implanted devices.
Develop an understanding of the principles of management of patients with Carotid artery disease.
Define strategies for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with acute aortic dissection.
Utilize Echocardiographic techniques in clinical diagnosis.
Understand the indications for transoesophageal echoes.
Understand the usefulness and limitations of stress echo.
Assess the cost-effectiveness of interventional procedures.
Evaluate the role of echocardiography in the management of ischemic hear disease, valvular heart disease and cardiac arrhythmias。
Identify management strategies for patients at high risk of sudden death.
Evaluate the indications for and results of ablation therapy for tachyarrhythmias.
Review current opinions regarding treatment of patients with lipid disorders.
Practical demonstrations will be given in all forms of Angioplasty and Stent placement。
Assess the role of timing of valvular surgery with particulate emphasis on new surgical approaches to aortic and mitral valve repair and replacement.
Review current status of cardiac transplantation.
Assess the role of coronary artery graft surgery Vs. PTCA for stable angina.
Understand the issues of oestrogen replacement in women with particular reference to heart disease.
Explore the techniques of managing patients with severe heart failure.
Gain insight into the newer and expanding role for cardiac pacing.
Investigate the management and treatment of women with heart disease.
Revise the major anatomic and physiologic characteristics of congenital heart disease both operated and unoperated, as sees in adolescents and adults.

A TV Link between Catheter room and auditorium will be frequently employed.

Each week of the course will include intensive training and demonstrations in the catheter laboratory or ward or operating theatre areas.

PASSPORT AND VISA: Entry into Australia will be denied to those not holding a current passport and entry visa. It is also essential to purchase a return ticket. Course Venue: Epworth Hospital, Richmond, is located in the inner eastern suburb of Richmond, 2km from the central city area.

Language: The officinal language for the course is English.

Registration: A Registration fee of US$ 1500 is payable by bank draft to an Australian Bank prior to the commencement of the course.

Cancellations: All cancellations are to be in writing and made one month prior to the commencement of the course. A refund of 95% of the total registration fee will be made.

A SPECIAL OFFER-REDUCED REGISTRATION FEE OF US$ 200.00 PER WEEK IS AVAILABLE FOR REGISTERED NURSES INTERESTED IN CARDIOVASCULAR MEDICINE.

Insurance: The Asian Pacific Society of Cardiology and the Victorian Heart Centre cannot accept liability for personal injuries sustained by loss or damage to property owned by registrants. We advice you to ensure adequate travel and personal effects insurance. Unless reciprocal agreements exist, registrants are not covered under the Government Medicare Scheme.

Accommodation:This can be arranged for you if required. Accommodation varies from economically priced rooms in a guest house with your own cooking facilities within walking distance from the hospital to a variety of apartments or motels situated a short tram ride away.
