Questions to ask the doctor or nurse when you are arranging the surgery

  1. When will the surgery date be set?
  2. How long will the hospital stay be?
  3. Is one or more people permitted to stay with the baby, 24 hours per day?
  4. Is directed donation of blood allowed (can I donate blood for my baby's transfusion)?
  5. What are the feeding instructions in the 24 hours leading up to the surgery?
  6. How long will the surgery likely last?
  7. How long will the stay in recovery or ICU be?
  8. How soon after surgery will I be able to see my baby?
  9. What forms will I need to sign for the surgery and hospital stay? Are they available to read in advance?
  10. What exactly will be done during the surgery (if you want to know this)?
  11. What should I bring to the hospital?

It may be a good idea to bring this list, along with a written list other questions you think of to your consultation appointment. Don't be shy to ask these questions and any others you may think of.

Also, you may ask the doctor to slow down so that you can take notes when the doctor is explaining things to you. If you are very nervous, you may not remember much, and you will be filled with questions when you are home after the appointment.

Remember, it is your child and you have the right to ask anything that concerns his or her well-being. No question is silly or unimportant.
