Last week, the FDA gave Vivus, Inc. clearance to sell its MUSE
(alprostadil) urethral suppository for the treatment of erectile
dysfunction.

MUSE provides a dose of a type of a synthetic prostaglandin called
alprostadil. It does not require any injections or pumps, and consists
of a very small suppository that is inserted about 1 inch into the urethra
with a disposable plastic applicator.

A study of 996 men with organic erectile dysfunction in a 3 month
home-treatment study found that about 65% of the men using MUSE had
intercourse at least once, compared to 19% of the men using a placebo.
Among the men for whom MUSE was successful, using MUSE resulted in
sexual intercourse about 7 times out of ten. The most common side effect
reported, mild and transient penile pain, occurred in about 11% of use.

The company expects to begin shipping the product in early 1997.
