Histopathological findings
The hysterectomy specimen contained typical uterine leiomyomas.
In addition,
nodules of bland-looking ovoid cells were found in the
myometrium which were
sometimes confluent. These tumor nodules were highly
vascular (Fig. 1). In
places the cells were spindle-shaped and surrounded blood
vessels in a
concentric fashion. Mitotic figures were very infrequent,
and the tumor growth
rate (moab KiS5) was < 1%. Vessel invasion was a common
finding (Fig. 2). No such tumor tissue was present
in the endometrium,
which showed complex hyperplasia. The pelvic recurrence
was slightly more
cellular than the primary tumor, but was essentially
similar (Fig. 3). Again, a large
number of blood vessels was a prominent finding (Fig.
4), and vessel invasion was frequently observed (Fig.
5).
