* * * ADIRONDACKS HIGH * * *
George and I arrived in the Adirondacks High Peaks Region approx. 12 noon on Monday August 28th 2000. After setting up camp, we hopped on the trail to the summit of Scarface Mt. It was an easy 3.35 mile (each way) hike with an ascent of 1480 ft. We made it a bit more interesting by losing the trail and bushwacking part of the way. The next morning we started our big trip. We paddled our inflatable canoes 3 miles to the north end of beautiful Lake Placid. The lake lived up to it's name by providing us with calm waters. At the top of the lake we picked up the trail for the summit of Whiteface Mt. Its the fifth highest in N.Y. State with an elevation of 4867ft. After stashing our canoes in the woods we started the 3.5 mile trek to the summit. We gained over 3200ft elevation during the hike, most of it in the last mile. During that final stretch we found ourselves scrambling on hands and knees over large boulders which challenged not only our stamina but balance as well. We reached the summit at approx. 3pm and stayed for an hour. Now we were pressed to get back before dark. Going down proved to be as difficult as getting up. It was tough on the quads and balance became an issue. We reached our canoes just before sunset. The problem was that we would paddle the last mile in darkness. We did that but had to hug the shoreline as several power boats were zipping around the lake. I kept my flaslight handy but fortunately the boats stayed away from the shoreline. Back at camp we were too tired to cook so we dined on cheese, crackers, peanut butter and beer.
Early next morning we broke camp and headed to the trailhead for Mt Jo. We wanted to bag one more mountain before heading home. Mt. Jo is small; 2876ft. The trail is approx. 1 mile with an ascent of 710 ft. We had lunch on the summit and enjoyed spectacular views of the high peaks to the south. Then it was back to the car for the ride home. We spent only 50 hours in the Adirondacks but squeezed in much fun and excitement. It was a great trip and George is the perfect guy for such an adventure.
