I have Ausperger's. Its impossible to convey what a relief I felt when I could finally put a name to all the problems that I've been battling all my life. When I was a kid, all they could tell my parents was that I was mildly autistic, but little else. I till have it, but now I feel like I have some opportunity to take advantage of it.

I've just started getting more information on Hyperlexia, Semantic and Pragmatic Language Disorders. My 4 year old daughter was diagnosed with Autism a year ago. I believe that the doctor who gave her this diagnoses was not well versed in the Autism spe trum disorders. My child is very high functioning and so incrediblly verbal. I believe that she definately has Autistic symtoms but that she falls somewhere else under the spectrum. As her parents we are trying so desperately to find the right approac to take in helping our child learn and understand the world around her. Without the right diagnosis we are fighting a losing battle and wasting so much valuable time in the process. This site has put things into a new perspective and helped us to focus more clearly on the areas that are important in this unique learning style, and to make sure the proper tools are in place to accomplish this goal. Thankyou for this much needed information and the professionalism of your web site.

I am in the educational field, and have been working with a boy who had several autistic like behaviors,,, although he was more social. He could read large words like telephone, puzzle, housekeeping, and more when we first got him at age 4!!! Very bright,, with severe social behaviors,, lacks controll of emotions.. I had suspected Aspergers syndrome (spelling?) How do you know if a child as hyperlexia nad if they do, tips on reaching this child would be greatly appreciated.... This child has developed a strong bond with me but he graduates our program this year,, and I would like to be able to help him transition to the next level... What I fear is that he will feel that I have abandond him,,,, he responds well to me ,, but not to others,, how can i help him to transfer ski ls he has learned in my class to another environment??? thank u for your time and thanks in advance for your response... I'm a speech-language pathologist who graduated from college in the 70's (our profession is less than 100 years old). I had never heard of this disorder until recently. I have a client (high school student) that has puzzled me tremendously for the past t o years!!! FINALLY.... I began to read something that described my student!!!! Hooray!!!! Some had suggested autism, but I was certain he did not show enough of the characteristics, eventhough there were a few similarities. I applaud you all, parents nd professionals alike. I've not yet spoken w/ this child's parents, but once I'm comfortable that I understand it enough, I will. Hope to find more on the older child. Some of his writings and some of his usually passive responses, that were not so pa sive, had me really worried about the potential of him being a time bomb that might explode either now or in adulthood. I am so relieved to understand what's REALLY going on. Thank you, please keep in touch.

I'm thrilled to find this site! I have a 14 year old son who was diagnosed at 2 with autism. At the time the nuerologist felt that he did not fully fit the criteria for autistic children but that he clearly needed intense help. We came across info about h perlexia when Tim was 5 and realized that it fit our sons difficulties perfectly. I would love to hear from people or kids going thru adolescence with this disorder. Tim attends regular classes and continues to impress everyone with his mathematical gifts He would like to play on the Red Sox when he grows up and then pursue a career as a weather man. He really struggles socially and I think it would help him to hear about other people who share his wonderful and challenging gifts that go along with Hyperl xia. Thanks.

After 14 years of foggy diagnoses like "We don't think she's..." and "Multiply handicapped", we've finally found the term that fits our 16 year old daughter's learning disability. I can't believe that this syndrome has been noted since the 60's but in 14 years no one has ever once mentioned it to us as a possibility. I loved reading the guest book just to know that I'm not the only one who's been there. We have hooked up with a doctor in Staten Island, NY, who does neurological work. What he's done for our daughter is nothing short of amazing, tackling it symptom by symptom without really knowing what the whole was. Now that we have this knowledge, I'm sure her progress will be even better. If anyone out there is from the NY area and would like our do tor's name and more information about the types of treatments she's receiving, please e-mail.

Great Site! I am the parent of 9 year-old boy/girl twins. My daughter is dyslexic, and my son has been skirting around the PDD diagnosis much of his life... everyone thinks he fits, but doesn't quite! I've only recently become familiar with hyperlexia nd it fits my son, Peter, to a tee! I'm working on becoming more familiar with hyperlexia. I know my son is very intelligent, but functions at an average level at school. The school is delighted he manages academically and doesn't seem to see the need o encourage him to function at his potential. Anyone had a similar problem?

As a proud non-conformist, I have always resisted any effort to put a "label" on my 7 year old son's differences. (At age 4 THEY tried to convince me he had PDD, I knew I had a highly gifted and intellegent child). I am thrilled, though, to have just foun out (through the internet) about hyperlexia. Hi! I have a 9 year old sister who has been diagnosed as Hyperlexic. Dylexia is hereditary in my family, luckily, I got neither. However, for those of you who are curious about how hyperlexic children are here are the noticable characteristics my mother nd I noticed when my sister was very young (these fit Hyperlexic characterics) Katie potty-trained and learned to walk very late, she was fascinated by books (not dolls) she would sleep with her books as other little girls slept with their favorite baby-d lls. Katie used 'babytalk' for an exceptionally long time. She could not answer abstract questions. That is to say, she could tell you her full name, address, birthdate, and telephone number but, she would not be able to tell you how she felt that day or if she enjoyed her lunch. She would watch Disney movies over and over til she had the dialogue memorized and then would watch them while saying EVERY single line. Katie is a visual learner. So, cheerleading in grade school came very easy to her. She co ld see the leader do the movements to the cheer and hear the chants and she would know the cheer automatically. Her social skills were poor but, are increasing rapidly. Sometimes she would revert back to 'babytalk' and children her age would not be able to understand what she was trying to say and then that would hurt Katie's feelings and then add to her internal turmoil as a child who no one seems to understand. If you think your child is hyperlexic get them diagnosed and DO NOT give up HOPE! Too many children are slapped with the label "autistic" which can really discourag parents and teachers and the child. If you want to ask me any questions about my experien e feel free to email me. Great web site! I am grateful for any and all information and sharing from other parents that I can get my hands on. I have 5 year old boy/girl twins, and my son (only) has been diagnosed with PDD and Hyperlexia. Like many other family histories on your w , my son had the ability at 2 years of age of reading common and everyday signs, phrases and letters. On the flip side, he began to exhibit inconsolable trantrums, an inability to cope or function around crowds or groups and a sensitivity to sounds and to ch. Since his diagnosis, my husband and I have been on the fast-track to advocate and obtain information. I found that a good daily school setting (IEP and public school), weekly 1 on 1 sensory integration therapy to help with the self help issues as well as speech therapy have helped tremendously in his progression to function daily. I also am taking a parenting class with parents of children who have a variety of developmental disabilities. The focus is to help us help our children develop appropriate se f-help, play and social skills, by breaking down the learning steps of many skills. I am a single mother to a 3 1/2 yr old son who has many issues that the medical community have been unable to get a handle on. Hyperlexia is something I came across while researching the web for his areas of delays and behavioral issues. He is ADHD, has a tentative diagnosis of CAPD and PDD. He shows autistic trendencies but is not a true autistic. He has sensory disorders and executive control disorder. We have recently begun medication (tenex) which I am finding has little benefit in elation to the side effects. He is a very intelligent child, but his behavioral issues are sending me past the threshold of stress managability. He was a micro-premie (14 weeks premature, born in the 26th week of gestation). He had a rough 2 1/2 months in the hospital, but developed rapidly once out. It was approx in his 11 month that everything came to a halt. Now we are where we are and I am eeling frazzled, depressed, stressed, but most of all... very guilty. I look forward to your site's completion. Am glad to have found you. Thank you!

My wife and I have two children. A 6 yr old daughter and 3.5 yr old son. My wife has suspected for some time that there is something not quite right about our daughter. I did not share her feelings then but in the last year I have come to share her susp cions. She is a sweet loving child who get along with all sorts of people generally. We recently had her tested, not for anything in particular but we suspected ADD. The doctor is not ruling out ADD but she suspects that Hyperlexia may be present. She s doing more work to refine this diagnosis by speaking directly to my daughters teachers (Montessori) and setting up an appointment with a psycologist who specializes in learning disabilities. It has been a rocky few years with yelling, crying, feelings f guilt, etc.. We are determined to find and give her the help she needs. Great to see a site where parents with like concerns can come to for information and to share their experiences, just to let them know they are not alone. We will be back. thx

I have a 6 year old boy named alex who is in an inclusion setting at our local Kindergarten. He has a shadow who is faded during Teacher Directed Activities. Our main problem is that our school system does not teach social skills directly, only incident lly. I have real concerns about whether he will become a social outcast by second grade. He is a pleasant, sweet, easy kid who the teachers all adore. He loves school, but still does not get the importance of peer relationships. He wants to have frien s over but does not know how to engage them for long periods of time. We are trying a number of Theory of Mind drills to try to get him to understand the perspective of others, etc. through our at home Lovaas PRogram. We occasionally use Carol Gray's S cial STories and have set up some behavior modification programs to encourage positive social behaviors with kids. Unless the school buys into teaching these same skills to the whole class, there just isn't enough modeling to help him generalize. What do we have to do to get the school systems to understand that all these kids need social skills training. Perhaps they want to wait until kids are killing each other in elementary school. What more is there to say!

I was surprised to hear of hyperlexia as a diagnostic term. I was diagnosed with autism in my childhood, but the standard diagnosis does not seem to apply to my high functioning level. Hyperlexia seems to apply more effectively. However, is it normal f r children with this disorder to be slow in speech development and walking skills? I did not walk until 3 years or talk fully until 4 years. Concepts which other children and adults take for granted as easy to acquire have been exceptionally hard for me to understand. I'm curious if what I have experienced is the norm for individuals with hyperlexia... Thank you.

My 4 year old son was just diagnosed with Hyperlexia. Until today, I had never heard of it. What I've read so far is amazing. It's always been hard to describe my son to folks but I've known there was a problem for 2 years. Duke Hospital is doing resea ch on Autism and Hyperlexia. We are putting my son on a very low dose of Prozac (starting tomorrow) which is suppose to have dramatic results in Hyperlexic kids in just a few days. We'll see!

I am the parent of a 4 year old son dx with PDD-NOS at 2.5 yo. He had all of the autistic tendencies at that age but has been getting so much better. Am concerned about a dx that was wrong or too early for his age, hate to think of him being labeled som thing hes not, or being mislabeled. Has been in speech and occupational therapy since 2, and his early childhood teacher has commented that he might not be autistic, but if they remove the label I wonder if he will lose the services that he needs?

I am a 19 year old design student from Glamorgan university of south wales, I have recently been diagnosed as being hyperlexic/dyslexic. Througout my education i have been mocked constantly by teachers who have said that i am ignorant, and that i am not w lling to learn and dont respect there job. I have spent years being confused and found school very difficult, the only help i was able to gain was from a best freind who constantly helped me. Since being diagnosed as having hyperlexia with the use of spea ial equipment my university grades have improved a massive amount, at gcse's and A'level i worked hard and got c,d and e grades and now i have help such as extra time in exams, speacial reading glasses and other learing aids. I am now obtaining 1st's and ,1's at uni which shows the importance of making sure a hyperlexic person gets the maximum help possible. Dyslexia and hyperlexia will stay with you throughout life but you can work around it to improve your life. I know a few people with hyperlexia and t ey all have a fantastic imagination, this imagination can be used to your advantage in education, choose subjects such as design and art etc as a hyperlexic/dyslexic person will excel in these areas. I found your site very useful and would apreciate it if you could e-mail me with any new info you receive. I'm the mother of a precious 3 1/2 yo son. Very typical hyperlexic but we abandoned that dx in favor autism at two yo. Like other children represented here, he also read long before he could speak. (In fact, he could read words aloud that he couldn't po sibly utter purposefully). However, as his language has gotten more sophisticated, his autistic tendencies are fading away. He's still indifferent to peers - he thinks they're amusing but prefers his own company. He also seems a little foggy sometimes, s though he needs more time to process the spoken word. It was a pleasure to visit your web page. My wife and I are parents of twin boys, age 16, who were previously diagnosed as mildly autistic or autistic-like. Our research, however, leads us to believe that they are definitely hyperlexic. They have both een mainstreamed in the public schools, making above average to excellent grades. They would, however, benefit from additional help aimed specifically at their learning disability. One of them, we believe, has benefitted from auditory sensory training r ceived in an experimental setting (one of them received the training, while the other one didn't). The one who received the training seems to interact with his peers more easily, while his brother continues to be a loner who frequently demonstrates sympt ms of depression and extremely low self-esteem. It is in the area of social interaction with which my wife and I worry the most for them. Anyway, it is helpful and encouraging to know that there are others who share our plight. God bless.

I have a seventeen year old son who, according to the (very scant) information I have at this time, appears to be a classis hyperlexic in that he has, and always has had, decoding and spelling skills which excel in comparison to his reading comprehension kills. He is in twelfth grade now, goes to a school specifically for children with language based learning disorders and/or ADD (which he also has)and no one ever mentioned hyperlexia to me! Hi, I was on this listserve for about a year. My daughter Vienna is now 8 and in second grade. She is doing very, very well. She is in the group of students (3) working ahead of the others. my child shows some of the characteristics listed, but not all of them. some of them are seen, but in lesser degrees than described. She has the pdd dx. sensory intregration difficulties. We have seen much progress and she does not show the autism any more. I was browsing to find more answers for her. The site is very informational. Her hyperlexia is not as pronouced as the examples, but her ablility is above age level(5-2). She is just now begun to to read, but as described the nouns are the easiest. She is not having any behavioral problems and is very social.Not having any difficulty with peers at regular preschool. Her main feature is a language disorder.

I applaud Charlotte for setting up a site geared for parents of older hyperlexic kids, because the issues do change a great deal after the worst stuff is behind you. My son has not received any services since he was five; he's in a regular school (Montessori) where no one knows his history. We went through some scary times, like all of you here; but we've had wonderful support/intervention (our best therapist is an adult hyperlexic herself, she has such insight!). o those of you with young kids, please TAKE HEART. The changes that can occur are beyond imagining, and the developmental leaps are so rewarding. Other people just "raise" their children--but we are "building" children, and it is an exciting and unparalleled experience!

My son, age 17, was diagnosed with PDD/NOS at age 8. We hadn't heard of hyperlexia then, but it seems right on target. He's going through a rough time senior year with stress/depression -- graduating from high school this Sunday with honors, and college to start in the fall... leaving home is a scary thought -- and dorm life may be tricky, but he's made it this far because of a network of caring people - mentors and supporting peers (no close friends though). I'm hoping for the same with college (it's in our home town) and we (my son and I) are communicating with the appropriate people to make the transition as smooth as possible. The school 504 Plan can carry over to college (like an IEP). I look at your situations and can say I've been there - the tant ums, the tests and evaluations, the questions, the frustrations with spec. ed. services, and the joys of watching this unique and gifted child grow. I am a member of the AHA and although my 8 year old has not been diagnosed with Hyperlexia, she has many of the characteristics, although several are quite mild. At the very least she has ADHD, a language disorder and possible PDD with accelerated readin . We live in Florida and good people and services arenot easy to come by. We are trying medications for her ADHD and mood problems and every day is an adventure. She can be the sweetest child or the most demanding kid on the planet. It's always helpful to read what other parents are doing and how they're coping. Ive become an excellent advocate for my child especially regarding education issues. It's been enlightening. Thank you, thank you , thank you...you have given our family such a gift since we read your site. My husband (who is a physician) and I have been so devastated by the misdiagnosis after misdiagnosis thrown at our beautiful son. Our three and a half year old son is so affectionate, caring, sensitive and able to communicate very well in social situations when given little cues, yet he is different somehow. He was able to recite and recognize letters and numbers, both in and out of order, when he was a lit le over a year and a half. He is incredibly proficient at the computer, with skills that rival or surpass most adults. He has incredible powers of concentration, and can do a puzzle or a project for long, long periods of time. He is now reading full sen ences and understands them from the page, yet cannot process the same sentence when it is spoken to him. He is also incredibly gifted in fine motor and gross motor skills-athletic beyond his years. He has so many strengths, and yet...he is unable to spe k and associate with others like the rest of the children in his class. He was diagnosed with autism, which I knew was wrong. He was almost "banished" to a school for autistic children after a forty-five minute session with an "expert," without any diag ostic testing or observations in the school setting or conferences with his teachers. I was able to see that the doctor was "writing off" our son, and quickly pulled him away from such destructive intervention. Luckily, we have him in a fantastic school which is willing and able to do whatever necessary to see our bright and loving child with so much potential through this difficult time. What happens to all those children with hyperlexia out there who are not n environments where people question diagnosis and treatment? There is so much human potential wasted by an error in diagnosis. These errors are most often generated by overzealous, narrow focused professionals who feel threatened when they cannot box e eryone into a specific category. Hyperlexia is not commonly known by most experts in the field, it seem, and this is truly a shame. Our son is able to take anything he learns and "run" with it- he has a tremendous ability to learn new skills, such as communication with others or sentence structure, as I am sure most children with hyperlexia do as well. The diagnosis was made by me, just reading information in INTERNET. The main symptom for me was that my daughter read byherserlf when she was almost 2 years old, the problem is her social skills. Your site gave me a lot of information too. In my country nobody heard about Hyperlexia, even institutions that work with autistic kids. You people are amazing. I work with a child who has fragile X syndrome and have researched this syndrome as well as autism in order to assist him to best of my knowledge. He also reads words and spells at the grade seven level, but comprehension of what h reads, and expressive language is at a much lower level. Thus, I am lead to your site and find probably the best, organized and helpful sight for teaching strategies, information regarding the disability, resources and first hand life stories that I have ever come across. I couldn't pay for a workshop or conference and gain more insight and knowledge than I have right here. It sure tells me that you want these children helped. That you want other people to learn how to help them. I did not have to spend amount of dollars on texts and materials to learn how to teach these children. Our 3 year old is classic. At day care they suggested he was autistic or had ausperger's syndrome. Read about it, but it just wasn't him. He tests at a 14-27 month level, but oh what "splinter" skills! He is speaking much better as he learns to read. His herapist thinks we may need to start writing to him to communicate. Thank goodness for the hyperlexia websites! My son has been tested for hyperlexic tendencies. The school had heard little about hyperlexia, so it has been a learning experience for all of us. David is now 10, but I have heard from educators since preschoo that "something" is wrong with him. A hearing problem was suspected, and he always seemed to prefer the company of adults to that of peers. His lack of social skills has caused him to feel an outcast in school. Hopefully, a special ed plan combining in-c ass modifications and therapy sessions will finally give him the support he desperately needs. He will be making the difficult transition from elementary to middle school in the fall. I'm hopeful he will be able to acquire skills to help him overcome his eaknesses.

I started to see the light at the end of a ver long tunnel when I found your web-site two months ago. I can now put a name with the problems and can speak intelligently to school officials about the types of problems my son is having. For 12 years I hav been wondering why my over-intelligent child just can't grasp the common sense issues most of us just accept at normal. Once I started to verbally explain instead of assume he could figure it out he was able to learn how to pick up, sort and prpepare in a more reliable fashion. This web-site has opened many doors including getting help form school officials that thought because my child can read and recite 5-7 years ahead of his age he was brilliant wit no special needs. To military and other families that move often to new school districts. Each school we have moved to tried to blame these problems on moving, stress from father being overseas, etc. Do not allow your child to become the product of uninformed educators. If you will be transferring in the summer make sure you document and take wit you all of your paper work so that you do not have to be re-evaluated every time you move. Now that my child is in 7th grade and failing the schools are taking notice. If you now there are problems make sure you know how the systems work and use the laws to your advantage.

I am researching hyperlexia for a friend who is looking for answers regarding her 13 year old son. He is extremely gifted in language areas, average in math but is having big trouble socially in a small, private junior high school. I amd a Speech/Language pathologist teaching a classroom of Language Impaired students. One of my students has been diagnosed with hyperlexia. Her language comprehension scores are not extremely low, as others I've taught have been, but her social skill are seriously lacking. Her Mom and I have felt that there is an underlying current of anxiety which seems to dictate her actions, and have discussed the possibility of asking her doctor about medication. We also agreed that we would explore this websit , to find out if others have dealt with this problem, and what treatments have been found. Thanks for providing this service.

We have a 12 year old daughter who has been in speech and language therapy since age 3. She exhibits many of the characteristics of hyperlexia and think of her in these terms. We'd like to be in communication with people who have similar experiences wit their child. Math has been a particulaly hard subject.

I have a son, age 8, diagnosed as autistic but sharing common traits with hyperlexia. He's fully included in 3rd grade with a full time aide and making great progress. I'd be glad to share ideas and would like your ideas as well. He spells, decodes and does math wonderfully, but is still lagging in expressive language and pulling out answers from what he's read (especially wh_ questions).

Your information on Hyperlexia seems at times to be non-descript. My granddaughter could not express pain in her early years and would not speak without the aid of speech therapy. She still fragments her sentences, beginning a sentence but can not finis , unless it is a sentence she has practiced repeating it before. I certainly would cherish any further descriptive information regarding this disablity. Helpful solutions and guidance would be gratefully appreciated. My granddaughter will be eight in N vember.

My 6-year old grandson has Hyperlexia. Just discovered. When I read what Hyperlexia was, it was like reading his life story, right down to his love of trains! (Thomas the Tank Engine is a must!) He has a four-year old brother. I am also their care provide . Mom and Dad are still partially in denial, but the information I found on the internet has opened their eyes that they do have a very special child. How, as a Grandparent can I be involved without stepping on toes and what kinds of toys, books, activities would be good for him as the holiday season is getting closer and that is an important time to offer him new tools for his social and communication challenges. We are currently having our son tested. I have been aware that he has been different since he was a baby. I never was quite sure if there was somehting wrong with me or him. The preshcool teacher during the second week said she thought he was somewhat utistic. I have since taken him to a private ST and OT. The ST mentioned hyperlexia since he has been fascinated with letter, number, shapes and colors since 18 months. We will be having him tested through the school district soon. Charlotte, I really appreciate all the work you've done to fill the information gap for kids the age of ours.
